They charged out of the alley and finally reached the city’s central district. Mo Han found cover behind several tall statues and signaled everyone to hide.
The quest objective for this instance was to reach the Fountain Square at the city center and survive until the end. As time passed, all areas except the square would be engulfed by terrifying Zombie Hordes. Players failing to find weapons and reach this zone in time would inevitably be swallowed.
Fountain Square was the final Safe Zone.
“Safe Zone” didn’t mean absolute safety for players. Rather, it signified “no scene creature attacks.”
Therefore, this was where the most intense player-versus-player combat would erupt!
Concealed behind the statues, Caitlin set up her sniper rifle and scoped the distant tall buildings, wary of snipers on rooftops. She found nothing.
Still uneasy, she whispered, “I have a feeling someone might be on the rooftops. In this mode, snipers hiding high up often win first place.”
Luo Fei considered this. “Let me take a look.”
He raised his binoculars toward the distant high-rises. Sure enough, a figure in black military fatigues was perched atop one building. But the person was extremely sharp, only briefly exposing their head before ducking back into cover.
Luo Fei reported, “There is someone. A pro, at that. Let’s stay put for now. Things will get chaotic out there soon enough.”
Mo Han agreed. “Wait until the crowd thins out, then we’ll emerge to clean up.”
Anyone daring to enter Nightmare Mode had to have some skill. Of the hundred players dropped across the city, after eliminating those eliminated en route by zombie hordes, maybe a few dozen would make it to the square.
In this free-for-all, the earliest to reveal themselves died the fastest.
Finding a good hiding spot was crucial. Mo Han’s chosen location was excellent. Their backs were against a solid wall, completely nullifying any rear attacks. The two statues, over five meters tall, provided excellent cover. Even a rooftop sniper would have difficulty hitting them.
Now, they just needed to wait for the right opportunity.
Soon, chaotic gunfire erupted from nearby—the overlapping sounds of pistols and submachine guns, along with many footsteps. It seemed several squads, delayed in reaching the safe zone, had encountered each other right at the entrance to the square. A brutal skirmish ensued, with devastating casualties.
Moments later, the gunfire ceased, and silence returned.
A flock of birds, startled by the noise, flapped their wings up into the city sky.
The sky was dim, cold winds howled, adding a chilling solemnity to the ruined, post-apocalyptic city.
Luo Fei looked at Mo Han. He was observing their surroundings through binoculars, his expression serious, lips pressed tight. The profile of his face was smooth and elegant.
If not for the inappropriate time and place, Luo Fei would have loved to kiss him.
Suppressing that fervent impulse, Luo Fei also raised his binoculars to scan carefully.
Gunfire rang out again. This player only fired twice—bang, bang—followed by the screams of two players hitting the ground.
This person’s marksmanship was incredibly precise. Clearly concealed in the shadows, he’d emerged to take down two targets with two shots after pinpointing their positions.
— Player [ACT] eliminated player [This Game Is Hard]. Points: 34.
— Player [DOGDOG] eliminated player [This Game Is Fun]. Points: 35.
— Safe Zone remaining players: 10.
The system text notifications flashed across every player’s vision.
ACT was just feeling smug, when the next instant—pfft, pfft—two shots hissed down from the heights, punching straight through their chests!
— Player [Hunter] eliminated player [ACT]. Points: 54.
— Player [Hunter] eliminated player [DOGDOG]. Points: 55.
— Safe Zone remaining players: 8.
Four consecutive kill notifications popped up, making even Mo Han frown. “Is this Hunter the sniper on the rooftop?”
Luo Fei nodded. “That’s him.”
This sniper was on a different level and had seized the most advantageous high-ground position early.
He was like a true hunter, standing above, coldly watching the prey play their games below.
The feeling was chilling.
Mo Han stated, “If we want to be the last squad standing, we have to take him out.”
Only seven players remained in the Safe Zone—Luo Fei’s squad of four, plus three others. Whether this high-ground sniper was solo or part of a team was unknown. The Hunter’s high score made him the primary threat. Eliminate him, and their chances of winning would skyrocket.
The problem was the Hunter’s vantage point. Leaving the cover of the statues to rush his building would instantly turn them into live targets, their chests easily pierced.
Just then, two players, crouching low, made a dash toward the cover of the statues where Luo Fei’s team hid. Mo Han reacted instantly. Both hands raised, he rapidly squeezed the triggers. Two sharp cracks rang out. Firing both pistols simultaneously, he scored a kill with each.
The clean, efficient motion was so dazzling, Luo Fei couldn’t help but exclaim, “Beautiful!”
Mo Han smiled slightly.
— Player [MH] eliminated player [Passerby B].
— Player [MH] eliminated player [ICE].
Following closely, the sniper rifle’s report echoed again. More system notifications appeared.
— Player [Hunter] eliminated player [He Is My Boyfriend].
— Player [Hunter] eliminated player [I Am His Boyfriend].
— Safe Zone remaining players: 5.
Frank felt a chill. “Oh my god, Hunter must be solo! Five remaining… that’s us, plus him, isn’t it?”
A piercing system alarm blared: “Safe Zone shrinking! Zombie Horde has completely surrounded you! Eliminate all remaining enemies and become the Expedition King!”
When player numbers dropped too low, to prevent anyone from hiding in corners like restrooms and dragging out the timer, the system forcibly shrank the Safe Zone, flushing players into direct confrontation. The game ended only when a single player or squad remained.
The cover where they hid would soon be swallowed by the zombie horde.
They had to neutralize the man on the rooftop before that, securing their victory. The moment they revealed themselves, they’d be picked off, one by one.
Thinking this, Mo Han turned to Luo Fei. “How’s your sniping?”
Luo Fei answered honestly, “Decent.”
Mo Han said, “Then I’ll draw him out. You seize the chance to snipe him.”
Luo Fei froze. A fierce, surging emotion swelled in his chest. He hadn’t expected Mo Han to use himself as bait, entrusting the outcome and his safety to Luo Fei’s shot. It proved Mo Han trusted him deeply.
Being so trusted by the person he liked made Luo Fei’s eyes sting with heat. He looked at Mo Han earnestly. “You trust me?”
Mo Han smiled. “Of course. But you’ll only have maybe ten seconds.”
Luo Fei nodded firmly. “I’ll seize the chance.” He gently squeezed Mo Han’s hand. “Be careful.”
Mo Han instructed Caitlin to hand over the sniper rifle to Luo Fei. He took a long look at Luo Fei, then burst from behind the statue.
In that instant, Luo Fei felt his heart nearly stop.
On that distant high-rise, the player called Hunter was already scoped in. Mo Han, running out like that, would surely be shot.
Even if this was only a game, the thought of Mo Han getting shot in the head was agonizing.
He could not let Mo Han be gunned down before his eyes.
Luo Fei took a deep breath, forcing himself into a state of absolute focus.
The world around him fell silent. He mounted the sniper rifle, adjusting his angle from behind the statue, aiming at the high-rise.
After breaking cover, Mo Han immediately began evasive maneuvers, using a skilled, unpredictable S-path. A moving target was much harder to hit than a stationary one, and this delay bought precious seconds.
Just those few seconds!
Luo Fei scoped in, targeting the exposed head on the rooftop. He calmly squeezed the trigger.
At the exact same moment, the man above targeted the moving Mo Han and fired.
Two sniper rounds simultaneously hissed through the air, a sharp, piercing shriek!
One bullet, slicing through the cold wind, crossed nearly a kilometer in an instant, accurately drilling into the head of the player on the rooftop!
The other bullet—as if by silent understanding, Mo Han threw himself flat to the ground the very instant Luo Fei fired. The shot struck only his calf, not a fatal wound.
— Player [Mr. F] eliminated player [Hunter].
— Squad [MH], [Mr. F], [Handsome Only Three Seconds], [Hunting Queen] — all members survived! Successfully cleared Zombie Siege Nightmare Mode Instance.
— Teleporting out of the instance in 30 seconds. Please collect your clear rewards.
Luo Fei dropped his rifle and sprinted toward Mo Han at a hundred-meter dash, his voice trembling as he helped him up. “Are you alright?”
Seeing Mo Han fall had nearly sent Luo Fei’s heart leaping from his chest. Thank goodness he wasn’t killed.
Mo Han’s calf was bleeding steadily, the sharp pain of a bullet tearing through flesh and bone instantly flooding his senses.
Holographic game pain was brutally realistic. He must be suffering terribly.
Luo Fei’s heart ached with distress. He immediately pulled out the medical supplies, wanting to staunch the bleeding. But Mo Han stopped him, calm despite the pain. “It’s fine. The game’s almost over. I’ll be fine once we’re teleported out.”
Luo Fei insisted, “But you’re hurting.”
Ignoring Mo Han’s refusal, he firmly wrapped the wound with gauze and applied a pain-relieving balm.
Mo Han’s pain visibly eased.
The earnest Mr. F with the system face was so anxious, carefully bandaging his leg. After a moment, Mo Han couldn’t help but laugh softly. “I only took a small injury. Why are you more nervous than I am?”
Luo Fei thought, I’m this nervous about you because I like you! You’re the person I most want to protect!
Seeing you hurt, even a little, hurts me more than if I were injured myself. Watching someone else shoot you made me want to tear them to shreds.
But before he could voice this thought, the system teleported them out of the instance.
Then, a message from Mo Han popped up on Luo Fei’s interface: “It’s been a pleasure meeting you. You’re a truly fantastic teammate. I’m logging off now. Let’s play again sometime.”
Luo Fei: “………………”
Aaah, he wanted to explode on the spot.
Did Mo Han saying this mean he felt some fondness for him too? Could he run downstairs and do three victory laps?
