Chapter 41: Mate
The white-haired cub swayed as he opened the door to the lounge. Deng Xi, who had taken advantage of the little mute’s absence to secretly open the jar of dried fish, heard the noise and frantically turned his head, hiding the dried fish behind his back.
It was only when he saw that it was the white-haired cub that Deng Xi breathed a sigh of relief and took out the dried fish again.
The golden-haired, blue-tailed little merman generously waved at his new friend. “Do you want some too?”
It took Deng Xi a while to reopen the tightly screwed jar, so much so that his fingertips turned red.
The white-haired cub held his comm and walked into the lounge, preciously taking the dried fish from the big brother’s hand. “Thank you, big brother.”
Deng Xi’s eyes curved, and he asked curiously, “What’s your name?”
The white-haired cub said, “My mom says I’m a bunny.”
The bunny climbed onto a chair next to Deng Xi’s mobility chair and sat down steadily. Under the little merman’s amazed gaze, he skillfully opened his comm. After the blue screen had switched through many images, it stopped on an interface with an unfamiliar figure.
So amazing.
After watching it once, Deng Xi still hadn’t memorized the complicated operations. He tilted his head. “What is this?”
“Class.” The white-haired cub turned his head and said seriously, “Bunny is listening to the teacher’s lecture.”
What was class?
Deng Xi thought of Teacher Xiaomei, whom the little mute had shown him. Was it also to popularize human knowledge?
“My mom said I’m different from the other children. I can’t go to school.” The bunny’s white hair hung down the side of his face. “I can only listen to the teacher’s lectures at home.”
“Mmm…” Deng Xi thought for a moment. “Then shall I attend class with Bunny?”
The white-haired cub’s eyes widened. “Really?”
Deng Xi nodded vigorously.
The white-haired cub and the little merman stared intently at the video playing on the blue screen. Because the bunny was only five years old, the online course that Dr. Li had found for him was still in the enlightenment stage.
It was similar to teaching children how to recognize words and pronounce them, and basic arithmetic like one plus one equals two.
It was unexpectedly suitable for the illiterate little merman who had just entered the human world. Although Deng Xi could understand the human language with his merman ability, his ability to receive information also needed a little reaction time, especially when it was mixed with a large number of nouns that Deng Xi didn’t understand.
The teacher on the blue screen pointed at a poem on the blackboard and read it with a clear and round voice. “This is a poem written by a great poet in the ancient Eastern era. Children, please read along with me. The bright moonlight before my bed—”
Deng Xi propped his chin on his hands and listened attentively.
He was very smart. Since he could understand the human language, all he needed to do to remember the human characters was to match them up.
The little merman quickly memorized this poem.
During the break, Deng Xi proudly rewarded himself and the bunny with a few dried fish.
After the language class was the math class.
Deng Xi counted on his fingers, memorizing the human numbers one by one.
When the door to the lounge opened again, Si Jisheng looked up and couldn’t help but be stunned.
The quiet lounge was illuminated by the dim yellow light of the evening, casting two long, slanting shadows. The blue screen of the comm was quietly playing. The white-haired cub and the golden-haired, blue-tailed little merman in front of the round table were leaning against each other, crookedly, across two chairs. Accompanied by the lecture that had never stopped, they had vaguely taken an afternoon nap.
They still hadn’t woken up.
Dr. Li, who was following behind him, couldn’t help but laugh. “I heard that the Marshal’s lover, like you, also came from a backward, low-level, fringe planet.”
Si Jisheng nodded coldly.
Dr. Li: “He probably had no contact with human society before this.”
Si Jisheng did not make a sound.
Dr. Li said seriously, “Then the Marshal who brought him into this new world must take responsibility. Just like Bunny, who still doesn’t understand anything, you can’t just give.”
Si Jisheng turned his head sideways and listened quietly.
Dr. Li, who was very experienced in parenting, shared her experience. “You have to personally teach him how to grow up independently in this new world and cultivate him into a person with a sound personality.”
“Your lover is probably still a child psychologically.”
“In the beginning, he will probably be very dependent on you. Because he lacks a sense of security, he will want to be with you at all times. But in a normal relationship, this attitude is a pathological, distorted attachment.”
“Marshal, you have to be willing to let go.”
Dr. Li smiled. “Perhaps the first step is to enroll him in a human course.” She continued, “I can send you all the courses that my child is studying.”
Because there was no school specifically for aliens yet, if she sent Bunny to a normal school, Dr. Li knew in her heart that the “bullying” incident that had happened in the family area today would definitely not be a one-time occurrence when she wasn’t looking.
She could only, and could only, bring Bunny with her and let him watch the online courses.
Si Jisheng nodded slightly. “Thank you.”
Deng Xi was in a daze. There was a constant, noisy sound by his ear. It seemed to be the teacher’s lecture, and it also seemed to be the sound of humans talking. But unexpectedly, it was not noisy.
This was an environment that Deng Xi would never have when he was sleeping peacefully in the deep sea. But it was this bit of noise that made him sink even deeper into his dream, breathing steadily.
“Deng Xi?”
Mmm, who’s calling him?
Go away.
Si Jisheng raised his hand and pinched the little merman’s nose.
His breath hitched. Deng Xi impatiently waved his hand in his sleep and slapped away the hand that was disturbing him.
The crisp sound slowly woke the sleeping Deng Xi up. He trembled his eyelids in a daze. The moment his blue eyes opened, the world was filled with double images. Only the little mute, who was sitting beside him and quietly looking at him, was exceptionally clear.
His pale silver pupils also seemed to reflect his own figure.
While Deng Xi was still in a daze, he heard a low, magnetic voice enter his ears. “We’re going home.”
Seeing Deng Xi open his eyes, Si Jisheng stood up, placed the remaining snacks on the table into Deng Xi’s flying chair, and when he bent down, the little merman suddenly opened his arms. “I want a hug.”
Deng Xi actually remembered the not-so-gentle and also unfamiliar embrace from before the little mute had left.
We’re going home.
Can you hold me on the way home?
Si Jisheng straightened up and, under Deng Xi’s expectant gaze, said indifferently, “I don’t need to carry you out yet.”
Deng Xi understood.
In the future, unless necessary, the little mute would not hold him.
Deng Xi lowered his eyelids in grievance. “Why?”
Si Jisheng pulled the mobility chair and slowly walked out. “Because I misunderstood something.”
Deng Xi tilted his head. “What is it?”
Si Jisheng did not make a sound.
He and Deng Xi were not yet in a close enough relationship to hug like that.
Deng Xi didn’t understand anything.
But he couldn’t take advantage of the fact that Deng Xi didn’t understand anything.
Because Deng Xi didn’t want to operate the flying chair, the man in the black military greatcoat pulled the translucent pink little tail behind him and walked step by step to the flying ship.
Under Deng Xi’s confused gaze, Si Jisheng said in a low voice, “Because in the human world, a naked embrace is something that only mates can do together.”
Deng Xi froze on the spot in the flying chair. A pink blush instantly spread to the corners of his eyes. He trembled his eyelids and said in a small voice, “But in our world, touching tails is what mates do.”
Our world.
Si Jisheng’s breath hitched.
Deng Xi was a little wronged. He lowered his eyelids and continued, “As long as we don’t touch tails, it’s okay for me and Little Mute to hug.”
“It’s not okay.” Si Jisheng suppressed the aching in his chest, closed his silver eyes, and his attitude was still firm as he refused, “We’re in the human world. We’ll be misunderstood.”
Deng Xi’s little face scrunched up in frustration. He came up with a good idea. “Then let’s hug secretly, so that no one else can see!”
Si Jisheng pushed Deng Xi’s mobility chair onto the flying ship, activated the ship’s automatic navigation mode, then turned sideways to face Deng Xi. He let out a suppressed breath of cold air, half-squatted in front of the flying chair, which had returned to the ground after its program was turned off, and patiently explained, “Boyfriend does not mean good friend.”
Deng Xi’s fingertips curled slightly, and he gripped the seat of the flying chair. He looked at the silver-tail, who was so close to him. Under the silver eyes’ calm gaze, he slowly leaned forward.
They were very close.
Their breaths were almost intertwined.
Deng Xi’s blue eyes were still clear and clueless, as boundless as the ocean. He blinked his eyes very lightly. “Then what is it?”
If Si Jisheng gave people the feeling of a cold aura like a deep-sea abyss, then Deng Xi was a warm, moist sea breeze blowing over a calm sea under the gentle sun.
The two blended together, but were surprisingly harmonious.
Si Jisheng said, word by word, in a low voice, “It’s what humans call their mate.”
His blue eyes slightly dilated, then widened.
The harmonious, cold aura seemed to have reasserted its presence in an instant, so strong that Deng Xi could not ignore it. He seemed to have been surrounded, and only then did he belatedly realize the existence of the intruder.
But when Deng Xi tentatively reached out his fingertips to touch it lightly, he found that it was not as hard and unbreakable as it looked. On the contrary, it could be easily pushed away, and even pushed away forever.
It had always restrained its sharpness towards Deng Xi.
His throat seemed to be blocked. Si Jisheng was silent for a moment before he asked softly, “Do you still want a hug?”
Deng Xi seemed to have been forced into a corner, step by step. He met the emotionless silver eyes, at a loss. They were indifferent, yet it was impossible to escape.
It seemed that he had to give a definite answer, to draw a clear dividing line in their world.
It would never be allowed to become as blurry as before.
But they were both male. They couldn’t become mates.
Deng Xi, like an ostrich, also shook his head very lightly and apologized in a small voice for his previous unreasonableness, “I’m sorry.”
“I won’t ask Little Mute to hold me in the future.”
