Chapter 49
Wen En got straight to the point, “A set of heat suppressants, two tubes of adrenaline, a bottle of antibiotics. Oh, and protein nutrient solution.”
“Got it,” the clerk said. He turned to the medicine cabinet, rummaged through it, and quickly found what Wen En needed.
The clerk stated a price and said, “We only accept cash in this store.”
Inconceivable. It wasn’t that there was a problem with accepting cash.
It was that the prices in this pharmacy were more than double the average price in the upper city. Wen En even suspected that the clerk was randomly quoting prices.
Now Wen En didn’t have much time to bargain with him. Wen En took out the money he had “borrowed” from the scar-faced man from his pocket, counted it, and fortunately, it was enough.
“Thank you,” the clerk took the money, briefly counted it, and without giving any change, put it directly into the cash register drawer.
This clerk is not clean. Wen En glanced at the clerk’s smiling eyes, lowered his head, and counted the medicines he had just bought. Sure enough, with this count, Wen En saw that something was wrong.
“One tube of suppressant is missing,” Wen En pointed to the packaging box of the suppressant and said.
“I don’t understand what you’re talking about,” the clerk said with a surprised look.
Even though he knew the clerk was playing dumb, Wen En could only say calmly on the surface, “There’s only an Alpha suppressant here, but I want a set of suppressants. The Interstellar Federation Empire’s drug laws stipulate that Alpha suppressants must be sold together with Omega suppressants, understand?”
“Ah~ I see,” the clerk waved his hand, looking apologetic. “That’s a rule for the upper city, stranger. This is the lower district. We only have Alpha suppressants.”
Wen En sneered, “What’s wrong? Isn’t the lower district part of the Interstellar Federation Empire?”
“Whoa, don’t misunderstand. I didn’t mean that,” the clerk said. “I’m just a businessman. I only do what’s beneficial to me.”
The clerk pointed to the dazed people around and said, “Your math should be very good, right? Then help me calculate. Which is more profitable, selling prescription painkillers or psychiatric drugs to these people, or selling suppressants to the heavily made-up Omegas in the alleys?”
Wen En wanted to refute. He wasn’t buying Omega suppressants for the Omegas in the alleys. But the words were on the tip of his tongue, and he closed his mouth. He knew what the pharmacy clerk was thinking. It was meaningless for him to try to prove himself or clear his name.
“Is the profit from Alpha suppressants very high?” Wen En said coldly.
The pharmacy clerk shrugged and said, “An Alpha in the lower district can afford a suppressant as long as they don’t get addicted to drugs.” The clerk pushed up the glasses on the bridge of his nose and added, “Omegas are different. Their final destination is to randomly pull someone off the street and go to bed with them, then extort a sum of money on the pretext of being marked and pregnant. They’re not willing to spend that money on suppressants.”
After thinking for a moment, the clerk added, “They’re quite happy to spend that money on abortion pills.”
Wen En’s face was cold, and he did not refute his words.
“So, as a fellow Beta, I advise you not to be a goody-two-shoes,” the clerk let out a contemptuous laugh. He made an insulting gesture with his hand, then placed his hand flat on the counter. Wen En looked down at the hand.
The clerk continued, “I don’t know which Omega tricked you into running errands for them. Poor Beta, you’re really being played by the Omegas. Listen to me, they’re not worth it…”
Before he could finish, the clerk suddenly let out a painful howl, “Ah— my hand, my hand!!!”
Tears of terror streamed from the clerk’s eyes. He looked down at his hand. A fruit knife had pierced through his hand and was nailed to the counter. Red blood seeped from the connection between the flesh and the blade, slowly crawling towards the edge of the counter.
The fruit knife that had been brought from Xiaoli’s house had somehow moved from Wen En’s waist to the center of the clerk’s palm.
“I didn’t come here to listen to your nonsense,” Wen En’s hand was on the handle of the knife, pressing forward with force.
“It hurts, it hurts! Be gentle, be gentle!” the clerk shouted.
His voice attracted the attention of the dazed addicts around. They all cast curious glances. The red blood was like a button, triggering some kind of switch. Some of the dazed people, upon seeing the blood, actually let out a strange cackle. Only one young but haggard person covered his face with his hands and wept softly.
“I’ll repeat my request again,” Wen En said in a low voice. “A set of heat suppressants, two tubes of adrenaline, a bottle of antibiotics, and a bottle of protein nutrient solution.”
“Can. You. Do. It?” Wen En said, word by word, in a declarative, emotionless, and threatening tone.
“Oh, of-of course, sir,” the clerk’s tone became respectful. The clerk used his other hand to wipe the cold sweat that had appeared on his forehead from the intense pain and said in as calm a voice as possible, “I’m still missing the Omega suppressant. Yes. The suppressant. Sir, could you… you know, let this knife leave my hand?”
Wen En pulled out the knife. The moment the metal was pulled from the muscle, the clerk almost screamed, but he held it in. He didn’t want to lose his composure in front of a group of mentally unstable lunatics. He took a few breaths and said, “Please wait here. I’ll go to the back warehouse. I’ll be back soon.”
“No,” Wen En refused. “I’ll go with you.”
“That’s… not a good idea,” the clerk forced a smile.
“Do you want me to repeat myself?” Wen En raised the knife.
“No, no,” the clerk immediately changed his tune. “Please come with me.”
Soon, Wen En got the Omega suppressant.
“The three-year shelf life has only two months left?” Wen En held the dusty tube of suppressant and frowned at the clerk. “Seriously?”
“I told you, almost no Omegas come to buy suppressants,” the clerk raised his still-bleeding palm and said, “I have no reason to lie to you.”
Alright, that’s true. Wen En knew he was probably not lying, but he still said fiercely on the surface, “You’d better not be playing me.”
The clerk said, “You just stabbed me with a knife, bro. I don’t have nine lives to play with you.”
What an unfunny joke. Wen En didn’t laugh. Instead, he raised the knife, the tip pointed at the clerk, and said, “Turn around.”
“What do you mean by that?” the clerk gasped. “Oh, heavens, I just had kidney stone surgery last month. Please don’t do this. Don’t have high expectations for my internal organs…”
“Shut up,” Wen En looked at the clerk with his back to him and said, “Now, count to thirty.”
Didn’t you just tell me to shut up? the clerk thought, but he still followed Wen En’s instructions and started counting:
“Alright, alright, then I’ll start. One, two, three…”
When he reached twelve, the clerk felt that something was wrong. The warehouse was so quiet. Wen En seemed to have turned into a ghost and was no longer making any sound. He turned around to see what was going on, but he found that he had been tricked by Wen En.
There was no one behind him. Wen En had already left while he was counting.
The moment he left the pharmacy, Wen En sensed that he was being watched.
It could be the forces behind the Beta clerk, or it could be other gangsters on the street. But that wasn’t the point. The point was, Wen En just wanted to get rid of these dangers quickly and get these medicines safely into the hands of those who needed them.
He once again ducked into the intricate, dark, and damp alleys. With the help of the complex terrain, he successfully shook off his pursuers. He didn’t remember the specific route, but fortunately, he still remembered the general direction back to Xiaoli’s house. With intuition and luck, he still found Xiaoli’s house.
This time, he chose to go back through the window instead of the main door.
Bella was startled by his appearance at the window, but she still let him in. After Wen En came in, Bella quickly locked the window. Wen En asked Bella, “Did Xiaoli have any abnormal reactions while I was gone?”
Bella shook her head and said, “No, my brother is still unconscious.”
“That’s good,” Wen En breathed a sigh of relief.
Then, he poured out a few antibiotics, and gave the remaining antibiotics, a tube of adrenaline, and an Omega suppressant to Bella, saying, “These are your brother’s medicine and suppressant. The usage instructions and dosage are on the package. I’ll leave Xiaoli to you.”
“No problem. Thank you,” Bella nodded gratefully. She took out two bottles of water from a cardboard box under the bed and gave one to Wen En. “Sir, your water.”
“Thank you,” Wen En took the bottled water and walked into the bathroom.
Romeo was still unconscious.
Romeo was leaning against the wall, his head against the concrete wall. To dissipate the heat, Wen En had unbuttoned his clothes. Before he left, Wen En had also placed a wet towel on his forehead.
Wen En touched Wen En’s neck. His temperature had temporarily dropped a little.
Now Romeo’s condition was much better than Xiaoli’s. Although he was also unconscious, at least he was not vomiting. Wen En checked the wound on his hand again. Some of it was no longer red and swollen and had begun to heal.
It seemed that in this war between the immune system and pheromones, Romeo’s immune system had the upper hand. This was not surprising. After all, an Alpha’s constitution was indeed more resilient.
After a brief thought, Wen En felt that the adrenaline was not needed for now. All he needed to do was to inject Romeo with the suppressant and then give him antibiotics.
Wen En acted quickly. He first opened the suppressant’s packaging, then held the Alpha’s head steady, and quickly and accurately plunged the needle into the Alpha’s gland on the back of his neck.
Perhaps Wen En had been a little rough and had hurt the unconscious Romeo. Romeo began to struggle violently.
“Sorry,” Wen En said. His tone was too calm, with no hint of apology.
Then Wen En took an antibiotic tablet, pinched Romeo’s chin, pried open his jaw, and with extreme speed, stuffed the small tablet into Romeo’s throat.
“Good boy, don’t move,” Wen En coaxed softly. His actions were not as gentle as his words. He twisted open the cap of the bottled water and, in the same way, fed Romeo several mouthfuls of water.
“Swallow,” Wen En’s hand was on Romeo’s neck, feeling the movement of the muscles. “If you dare to spit it out, you’re dead.”
The unconscious Romeo frowned: …
I feel a murderous aura.
He felt the Adam’s apple under his hand move. The water should have been swallowed.
Fortunately, his cats and dogs were all difficult to give medicine to. He had practiced this skill hard in the past to get these little animals to take their medicine. He had never expected that one day, he would use this skill on an Alpha in heat.
The medicine took effect quickly. In less than ten minutes, Romeo’s temperature dropped, and even the strong pheromones became much more soothing.
Wen En could finally breathe a sigh of relief. He put Romeo’s clothes back on so that it wouldn’t be awkward for both of them when he woke up.
When Wen En was buttoning the last button, Romeo suddenly grabbed his hand.
“Hmm?” Wen En was puzzled.
Romeo, like a small dog, nuzzled his hand and muttered something.
Wen En didn’t hear clearly and lowered his head to hear what Romeo was saying.
“Cold…” Romeo said in a low voice. “The snow is so cold…”
Snow?
Wen En didn’t think much of it and just thought it was sleep-talking. But when he held Romeo’s hand, he could indeed feel that his palm was cold. Romeo really felt cold. Strange. Wen En checked his temperature again. His temperature was normal, only his hands were inexplicably cold.
Maybe it’s because he’s been under too much stress these past few days and had a nightmare, Wen En thought. He had no choice but to reach out and pull the Alpha into his arms.
“Are you still cold?” Wen En asked in a low voice.
The Alpha in his arms didn’t speak, just nuzzled his head.
“…Are you a puppy?” Wen En was speechless.
The Alpha’s hands wrapped around his waist. Just when Wen En was about to suspect that he was faking unconsciousness, he stopped moving. Only the sound of his steady breathing could be heard.
Wen En: …
He’s really using me as a heater.
Wen En stroked the fluffy golden head in his arms and sighed. Soon, Wen En felt warm. The two of them were snuggled together, and with the soothing scent of lemon mixed with coconut, Wen En soon became so sleepy that he couldn’t open his eyes.
He held Romeo, leaned against the toilet, and fell asleep.
