Chapter 62: The Distance Between Beauty and Ugliness
“You should be glad you fell into my hands. I’m still relatively gentle.”
Gentle?
Alright, maybe at some point in the past, Wen En could be considered gentle. But the current Wen En was far from it.
“I’ve almost forgotten what the word ‘gentle’ means,” Romeo said.
Wen En smiled again, but Romeo couldn’t see any happiness in his deep, dark eyes. He must be angry too, just not showing it so obviously.
Sure enough, Wen En’s next move confirmed Romeo’s guess. Wen En grabbed Romeo by the collar, lifting him up like a puppy by the scruff of its neck. “Let’s go. We’ll go back to the room first.”
Wen En said, “Then we’ll sit down and have a slow chat.”
Wen En and Romeo’s double room was next to Della and the others’ room, A-637, with the room number A-638.
Thanks to Romeo and Claire, the smart system of A-638 had activated the fire prevention mode as soon as it received the fire alarm. Looking at the thickened, heat-insulated, and fireproof door that was now locked, Wen En felt a headache coming on. It took a lot of effort just to open the door. In the end, a passing property manager had to help them open it.
After seeing off the property manager, Romeo once again expressed his shocking opinion, “I think the fire protection system of the I.F.A.D. headquarters should be upgraded. It’s so jumpy over a little flame. Don’t you think it’s a waste of public resources?”
“Shut up,” Wen En said, and went in to check the room first.
Thanks to the fireproof door, the smoke detector in the room had not been triggered, and the furniture in the room had not been soaked in water. It was still as clean and dry as before.
The room was not large. To the right of the door was the bathroom, and to the left were two double beds with uniform gray and white bedding. At the foot of the beds was a two-seater sofa, a square white table, and two folding chairs. Behind the chairs was a wardrobe.
“It looks like a very cheap motel,” Romeo commented.
“Are you being picky now?” Wen En sneered.
Romeo sat on the nearest bed. Fortunately, the mattress was quite soft. “So, can you unlock my handcuffs now?” Romeo lay on the bed and said lazily, “This thing is so uncomfortable.”
“Unlock it yourself,” Wen En said. “Aren’t you very good at unlocking things?”
Looking at Romeo’s punchable face, Wen En’s hands itched to slap something. He held back.
“Alright, you found me, baby,” Romeo raised his hands. He was holding the silver handcuffs in his right hand. “I think the workmanship of this thing is very average. It’s hard to imagine that it’s a product of I.F.A.D.” With that, he casually threw it, and the handcuffs landed precisely in the trash can next to the table.
Wen En was speechless. He really wanted to slap him twice in the face.
“I only have one question for you,” Wen En said. “Answer me truthfully.”
“Go on,” Romeo said, not looking like he was taking Wen En’s words to heart.
Wen En looked down, thoughtfully at Romeo, who had once again fallen onto the bed, his limbs spread out like a starfish, lazily, and asked:
“What on earth were you and Claire doing just now?”
“We were just curious about how sensitive the smoke alarm was,” Romeo said.
“Really?” Wen En raised an eyebrow. “What’s there to be curious about?”
“Don’t you think it looks very out of place on the ceiling?” Romeo said.
Wen En: “???”
Wen En looked up at the ceiling. There was indeed a cylindrical fire smoke alarm on the white ceiling. The alarm was also white. If you didn’t look closely, you wouldn’t even notice its existence.
“Are you lying?” Wen En narrowed his eyes, staring at Romeo like a lizard looking at a passing fly.
Romeo was not to be outdone. He looked straight into Wen En’s eyes very calmly. “I’m not lying.”
“You don’t believe me,” Romeo moved his shoulder joints and said, “But in my current state, how can I prove it to you?”
“I don’t need proof,” Wen En said. “I just want you to tell the truth.”
“I have a few more questions for you.”
“Which one should I answer first?”
“You answer whichever one I ask.”
“I mean, are you satisfied with my answer to the last question?”
“Ahh…” Wen En thought for a moment before saying, “Not very satisfied, but, alright, that’s in the past. Let’s focus on the next question, okay?”
“Alright, you’re right about everything, sir.”
Romeo said casually. Of course, his mind was not as casual as his tone. He had been observing Wen En, just as Wen En had been observing him.
“I’ll change my clothes first,” Wen En said. “I’ll take a shower by the way. I’m soaked right now.”
“Of course,” Romeo said. “Do you need my help?”
“No,” Wen En opened the wardrobe, took out a set of clothes, and said, “I hope that when I come out of the shower, I’ll see you sitting obediently on the bed, not touching anything, and not playing any pranks. Otherwise.”
“Otherwise?”
The moment he finished speaking, Romeo saw a shadow flash before his eyes. Then, a not-so-heavy, not-so-light force hit his chin from the right side.
Incredible! Romeo’s eyes widened. He clutched his chin and glared at Wen En.
“Otherwise, it will be like this,” Wen En said. “Next time, my force won’t be so light.”
“You!” Romeo shouted.
Should he be angry? To be honest, Romeo didn’t actually feel very angry…
Instead, another emotion rippled in his heart. Romeo couldn’t describe the feeling. It was like someone had thrown a large sum of money at his face, and then walked away…
A bit like a reward?
No, Romeo, are you crazy? How could you think that? This is definitely not a reward for you! Wen En must be trying to humiliate you! Isn’t this one of his usual tricks?
It was just like smearing a little maple syrup on his palm, and a lot of stupid bees would come and lick his hand. Then, with a wave of his hand, a group of stupid bees would be slapped dead on the wall.
Romeo clutched his head and frantically recited his own name in his mind. Romeo, oh, Romeo, you must not fall into such an obvious trap…
Unfortunately, you can’t wrap fire in paper, and sugar is flammable.
Romeo looked down at his bro.
Apparently, his bro had betrayed him.
“…”
Romeo closed his eyes.
He thought, Can’t you be a little more promising?
Cool shower water sprayed from the showerhead, drenching Wen En’s head and body.
Wen En would occasionally take a cold shower. This helped to relax his muscles, and also promoted dopamine activity, relieving anxiety and stress, and maintaining a good mood.
Normally, when he returned to the headquarters, even if the mission was not over, he shouldn’t be under much pressure. At least he didn’t have to worry about his life in the headquarters.
But Wen En did have something on his mind. He was worrying about something. He didn’t know if he should do it or not. If he did, he felt that this…
Doesn’t this go against his persona?
Wen En turned off the shower faucet, stepped out of the bathtub, and came to the full-length mirror in the bathroom. Because he had taken a cold shower, there was not a single bit of fog or water droplets on the full-length mirror. Wen En’s image was clearly reflected in the mirror.
Will it succeed?
Wen En was not a narcissistic person. He rarely examined himself carefully. Today, he was doing so for a change.
The Beta man in the mirror looked… just like a Beta. Sorry, Wen En was a little at a loss for words, but he did feel that he looked similar to most Betas in this world. He couldn’t see any difference. Or was it that Wen En was not very sensitive to people’s beauty and ugliness?
No, Wen En felt that he could still clearly feel the beauty and ugliness of others.
For example, RV. Wen En, with his hand on his conscience, really couldn’t look RV in the eye and say, “You’re a beauty.” EWWW, that would be too disgusting.
Or for example, Della. When Wen En saw her, it was like seeing a more educated version of himself. Wen En didn’t seem to have any special feelings for her, let alone think she was very beautiful or ugly.
For example, Claire? Wen En was not familiar with her. Next.
Who’s next?
Romeo’s figure appeared before Wen En’s eyes.
Wen En looked at the mirror in surprise. The reflection of Wen En in the mirror had, at some point, turned into another person, into Romeo’s appearance.
Romeo was also naked, looking at him with a meaningful expression.
“Romeo? What are you doing here?” Is this a hallucination? For a moment, Wen En couldn’t tell what was real and what was an illusion.
Especially when the Romeo in the mirror said something, it made it even harder for Wen En to tell the difference.
Romeo said, “Do you want to sleep with me?”
Wen En: ?
A little direct, but it sounds like something Romeo would say.
Romeo smiled, raised his right hand, and made an “OK” gesture. Then, he opened his mouth, stuck out his tongue, and made a very suggestive and lewd gesture.
Wen En: ??? EWW…
This is really a little disgusting. Although Wen En also felt that this was a gesture that a person with low morals like Romeo would make.
Forget it, what’s beautiful, what’s ugly, just pretend he never thought about this problem… He decided to classify RV, Della, Claire, and Romeo all as “mentally unstable lunatics.”
He turned around, intending to get a bath towel to dry himself and then get dressed, but he hadn’t expected that he had forgotten to get a bath towel.
Wen En: …
He can’t just put on his clothes while he’s all wet, can he?
And just then, a knock suddenly came from the bathroom door.
Romeo’s voice came from outside the door, “Wen En, were you just calling my name?”
