Chapter 65: Queen and Gentleman
The moment Wen En left, Romeo snuck out of the room, following behind Wen En like a ghost. Wen En didn’t seem to notice until he reached the door of a conference room and stopped.
Wen En suddenly turned his head, glanced behind him, and sighed with a somewhat helpless expression.
What does that mean? Romeo thought. Did he get discovered?
Wen En quickly turned his head back, lowered it, and looked at the lock on the conference room door. The door was equipped with three types of locks: a keypad lock, a fingerprint lock, and an iris lock.
Wen En entered the password, fingerprint, and iris in sequence, and pushed the door open to enter.
Romeo looked up at the camera on the ceiling that was right above him and thought, Wen En really knows how to pick a place.
Just this camera alone was enough to give Romeo a headache. Not to mention how complicated the internal structure of this lock was, requiring professional tools to unlock. Right now, Wen En had neither Claire’s hacker gadgets to control the camera, nor professional lock-picking equipment. Going over now was no different from going to the battlefield naked.
Romeo was not interested in getting himself killed. He was not the kind of stubborn donkey who would not give up until he achieved his goal. On the contrary, he was always flexible.
Forget it, I’d better go back to bed and sleep.
He turned around, intending to go back the way he came, but suddenly he saw a human-shaped creature in a brown honey bear plush pajama, holding a can of soda, standing behind him.
“Ahhhhhh!” The two of them screamed at the same time.
“Are you trying to scare me to death, Claire!” Romeo almost broke out in a cold sweat. He patted his chest and took several breaths, then said angrily.
“I was about to ask you the same thing! What are you screaming for? You scared me!” Claire almost spilled the soda all over herself.
“What are you doing here?” Romeo said irritably.
“I saw Della sneaking out, so I followed,” Claire shook the soda in her hand and said, “I’m also getting something to eat and drink. I’m hungry.” She pointed to a soda vending machine not far away, “See? Free soda. The benefits at I.F.A.D. are really good.”
“Free?” Romeo walked over curiously. It really was free. It would be a waste not to drink it. Romeo also took a can of lychee-flavored iced soda, opened it, and took several sips.
“Not bad,” Romeo said with a satisfied sigh. “I thought people at I.F.A.D. only drank that bitter-as-hell Americano, or red tea with a frighteningly high polyphenol content.” He hadn’t expected them to also drink sweet and icy soda.
“By the way,” Romeo said, “Claire, did you get here before me?”
“Uh-huh,” Claire nodded. “A few minutes earlier than you.”
“Did Della also go into that conference room?” Romeo said.
“That’s right,” Claire said.
“What kind of confidential mission are they talking about, being so secretive?” The moment he finished speaking, Romeo suddenly remembered the questions Wen En had asked him about Claire a few hours ago.
Romeo said, “Do you know that Wen En and Della have been investigating your background recently?”
“Of course I know,” Claire said. “But there’s nothing to investigate.”
“They’re also investigating your blood relatives,” Romeo said. “Do you know about this?”
“I know,” Claire said. “Della asked me not long ago, but I didn’t say anything.” Claire lightly punched Romeo’s arm and said, “Did Wen En also ask you? You didn’t tell him anything, did you?”
“How could I?” Romeo said. “I didn’t tell Wen En anything.” Besides, Romeo and Claire had known each other for so long, but they actually knew very little about each other’s past. Of all of Wen En’s questions, apart from the fact that Claire used to be from the lower district, Romeo really didn’t know the rest.
“But he doesn’t believe me. He always thinks I’m hiding something from him,” Romeo shrugged.
“Hmph, alright,” Claire lowered her eyes and looked at the remaining half a can of soda in the can. Her beautiful, gem-like eyes were filled with some inscrutable emotions.
“Speaking of which,” Romeo remembered yesterday, when Claire was dragged into the room by Della. But he looked at Claire and saw no obvious bruises on her face or hands. Romeo still asked, “Della didn’t treat you violently yesterday, did she?”
Claire blinked, her eyes darting around. “Of course she did. Don’t be fooled by the fact that Della is a Beta woman. She’s a sexually repressed violent maniac. Maybe it’s because she’s studied too much and is too repressed.”
“That’s terrible,” Romeo took a sharp breath, exaggeratedly.
“But she didn’t succeed,” Claire took a small sip of soda and said, “Fortunately, I’m experienced and saw through her trick. I even beat her to a pulp. You don’t know how ridiculous she looked when she was kneeling on the ground, begging me to let her go.”
Claire clicked her tongue a few times, as if savoring her victory. She continued, “I lowered my noble head and said to her, ‘I won’t let you off so easily. You must be punished for your crimes!'”
“Queen behavior,” Romeo clapped and cheered.
“Then, I casually picked up a hanger from the wardrobe,” Claire said with a flourish, “and whipped Della a dozen times. Della was in so much pain that she was rolling on the ground. Forget it, I’m still a kind person. Seeing her in so much pain, I finally forgave her for her sins.”
“What about you, Romeo?” Claire asked curiously. “I feel that Wen En is also quite strict with you.” Claire gasped, clutched her chest, and looked as if she couldn’t bear it. “Did Wen En also use violence on you?”
At the mention of this, Romeo’s eye socket throbbed slightly, but to maintain his Alpha dignity, he still straightened his chest and said, “He wanted to, but I didn’t let him succeed.”
“Wow~~ so he’s that kind of person too,” Claire covered her mouth, her tone very exaggerated.
“He even tried to ambush me when I was taking a shower,” Romeo said. “If you ask me, I’ve never seen such a shameless person in my life. But I’m not a pushover. I directly pinned him in the bathtub and whipped and beat him. No matter how he begged for mercy, I wouldn’t stop. It was only when he couldn’t take it anymore and fainted that I reluctantly forgave him.”
Romeo said proudly, “But after all, I’m a gentleman. Seeing Wen En in so much pain, after he woke up, I still chose to forgive him.”
“Good, good,” Claire clapped. “Tough but gentle. That’s how a gentleman should be.”
In the conference room.
Romeo and Claire’s every move outside the door was projected onto the projection screen in the conference room in ultra-high definition.
As professional agents, Wen En and Della could, of course, read lips.
They looked at the screen, at Romeo and Claire laughing and talking, and were silent for a while.
“Let me clarify first,” Della was the first to break the awkward silence. “I did not use any extreme violence on Claire. Of course, Claire did not beat me to a pulp with a hanger.”
“Uh, I…” Wen En propped up his chin, his expression a little complicated. “I did have a little conflict with Romeo in the bathroom, but… uh, it wasn’t that exaggerated. First, I didn’t faint. Second…”
“Conflict?” Della’s features contorted.
“Oh, I didn’t mean that kind of conflict. Heavens, Della, please don’t get the wrong idea…”
“Oh,” Della said. “I didn’t know there were other meanings to conflict.”
It seemed that the more he explained, the more off-track it got.
Wen En suppressed the embarrassment in his heart and decided to quickly change the subject. “In any case, it’s good that those two are not causing trouble. Let them say whatever they want. Let’s get down to business.”
“I remember that the business is also related to those two, right?” Della said.
“Ahem, ahem,” Wen En cleared his throat and said, “Speaking of which, didn’t you find the traces of them browsing the headquarters’ internal network yesterday?”
“Oh, yes, that’s right,” Della tapped the computer connected to the screen a few times and said, “They’re quite cunning. They even cleared the population file browsing records of the internal network for a month. But with my efforts, I’ve restored all these records. Look.”
On the projection screen, a facial comparison chart appeared.
“Is this… Peter?” Wen En said with confusion. “Peter and another Peter?”
“Well, the comparison results show that these two Peters are probably the same person,” Della said.
“Heavens,” Wen En said. “But why were Romeo and Claire searching for this?”
“Good question,” Della said. “I dug deeper into this. Do you know what I found?”
Della pointed to the face of Peter Rove Rost, who was listed as a missing person, and said, “This Peter, his father, the entrepreneur old Rost, once had a marriage with Romeo’s Omega father.”
Wen En’s eyes widened.
What kind of melodramatic soap opera plot is this?
“You mean, they’re stepbrothers in the legal sense?”
“That’s right.”
“Wen En looked at the information of the entrepreneur old Rost and said, “But this marriage didn’t last long, because old Rost’s luxurious manor caught fire one night. Old Rost and his Omega partner, who was also Romeo’s biological Omega father, did not escape the fire.”
Wen En looked at the information. After a moment of thought, he said, “I see in the information that Romeo was still a child at that time, and his custody was with his Omega father.”
“So, Romeo escaped from the fire?”
“That’s the guess,” Della said.
“Then this Peter Rove Rost also escaped. To be precise, he barely escaped with his life from the fire—but he was severely burned because of it,” Wen En was lost in thought. This could also explain why Peter’s face was inlaid with a black metal mask. Under the mask were his melted skin and flesh.
