Chapter 150
The actor’s arrogant attitude silenced the SIA agents.
Having faced dungeons themselves, they knew how powerful players with props and abilities could be. Even with their own awakened abilities, they were no match for seasoned players.
The actor, seeing their silence, laughed maniacally, as if already envisioning his triumphant future.
As his laughter echoed through the room, the air shimmered, and Wen Xingxue appeared, his form flickering, standing before the actor.
“Xia Nan, your brother is dead.”
The actor’s laughter died in his throat, and he looked up at the shadowy figure, his face a mask of shock and disbelief.
“Who are you?! That’s impossible! What happened to my brother?!”
He couldn’t believe his brother, a top-twenty player, could be dead.
“No, you’re lying! You’re trying to trick me! My brother is strong! He wouldn’t die! This is just a ploy to break me!”
Wen Xingxue, although his expression couldn’t be seen, his voice dripping with malice, said:
“Impossible? He was only ranked twentieth. There are many stronger than him.”
The actor’s face paled, all traces of blood draining away.
“It was you! You killed him! Just because I played a prank on that kid, you killed my brother?!”
Wen Xingxue scoffed.
“I don’t kill people. Accidents happen in high-level dungeons. Your brother was simply too weak.”
He hadn’t done anything. Shen Wen hadn’t even had to lift a finger.
That was the cruel reality of the dungeon world. Even the strongest rivals could die in a dungeon at any moment.
The actor’s brother, having offended Wen Xingxue, constantly looking over his shoulder, his fear hindering his performance, had been killed by a monster in a high-level dungeon.
And he had taken his entire team down with him.
Guild Zero One, the actor’s brother’s guild, had already suffered heavy losses during the school incident, thanks to Shen Baizhou’s intervention.
Their planned massacre had failed, their members injured, forced to retreat to Central City to recover.
And now, this mission to a high-level dungeon had resulted in a total party kill.
After two failed missions, Guild Zero One wouldn’t be making any moves anytime soon.
Wen Xingxue had no personal grudge against the guild, but he had always disliked them.
Seeing the actor’s descent into madness, his impending imprisonment, Wen Xingxue felt a sense of grim satisfaction.
Qi Yao, who had overheard their conversation, his face grim, returned to his office and asked:
“What’s it like in your world? Do many players die?”
Wen Xingxue hummed and said simply:
“Players die every day. You’ve experienced the dangers of dungeons. High-level dungeons are much worse. You and your team were only in a C-level dungeon.”
Qi Yao’s face was serious, and he was silent for a moment, then asked:
“Did you find out who the first player to disappear was?”
Qi Yao sighed. “We’ve narrowed it down to a few people. But why are you asking?”
Wen Xingxue gave him a name:
“Sang Ming. Check when he disappeared. I suspect he was the first. And I think Guild Zero One is planning something.”
Qi Yao nodded. “Who is Sang Ming in Guild Zero One?”
“The guild leader,” Wen Xingxue replied.
He had founded the guild, recruited players, and held considerable power in Central City.
Wen Xingxue had initially dismissed him as just another guild leader, but the incident at the school exam room had made him suspicious.
Qi Yao sighed, running a hand through his hair in frustration.
“The dungeon monsters are dangerous enough, and now the players are divided, some with hidden agendas. This world is truly going to hell.”
Xing Nuo had a summer internship assignment for school, requiring him to write a three-hundred-word essay about his experience.
He thought about it for a long time, then decided to be an intern assistant at his eldest brother’s company.
It was early August, and the scorching summer sun beat down mercilessly.
Xing Nuo woke up early, put on his brown overalls with a teddy bear patch, his little backpack, and his ID card hanging around his neck.
Today was his first day on the job.
He was going to be the personal assistant to the company’s busiest executive – his brother, Shen Yan.
Wearing his little yellow sandals, which squeaked with every step, he waited obediently at the door for Shen Yan to pick him up.
Yes, the CEO himself had to come and get his little assistant.
Xing Nuo, holding Shen Yan’s hand, skipped to the car, sat in the back, and handed his backpack to Shen Yan.
“My water bottle inside. Big Brother, put in fridge, okay?”
Shen Yan, whose car had a mini-fridge, slung the backpack over his arm and shook his head.
“No, cold water bad for your tummy. I’ll fill it with warm water.”
Xing Nuo, the little assistant, made a request: “With honey.”
Shen Yan hummed, filled the water bottle with warm water, and added a spoonful of honey.
Xing Nuo took the bottle, shook it, and sipped through the straw.
Mid-sip, he remembered his role as an assistant.
“Big Brother, no, Mr. Shen Big Brother, you want honey water?”
Shen Yan, reading a proposal, hearing Xing Nuo’s awkward address, sighed and rubbed his forehead.
“No. I have a meeting later. Assistant Ke will look after you.”
After Lin Tezhu had been pulled into a dungeon, the company had hired a new assistant, Ke.
Assistant Ke, sitting in the front passenger seat, nodded.
“Yes, Mr. Shen. I’ll take care of your brother.”
Shen Yan’s company had been expanding, and he now had four or five assistants, each with different responsibilities.
They arrived at the company’s underground parking lot.
Xing Nuo followed Assistant Ke to the secretarial office, the squeaking of his little yellow sandals attracting everyone’s attention.
Assistant Ke, standing in the middle of the office, introduced Xing Nuo.
“This is our new intern assistant. He’ll be assisting Mr. Shen with his personal matters. He’ll be here for a week. Please take care of him.”
Xing Nuo nodded eagerly, his voice sweet.
“Pwease take care of me!”
A few secretaries who knew Xing Nuo smiled and offered him snacks.
“Xing Nuo, what are you doing here as an assistant?”
Xing Nuo, clutching the snacks, glanced at Assistant Ke and quickly tried to return them.
“I’m working. Can’t take bwibes.”
A secretary laughed, then, slapping her hand on the desk, slipped a jelly candy into Xing Nuo’s pocket.
“Take it, Little Assistant. We’re counting on you to put in a good word for us with Boss Shen!”
Xing Nuo’s pockets were now filled with snacks, and he couldn’t refuse them all.
Assistant Ke just smiled and led Xing Nuo to a vacant desk near the door.
“This desk is free. You can sit here for the week.”
Xing Nuo hung his ID card on the hook and looked up.
“What I do?”
Assistant Ke, stumped, thought for a moment.
“Just follow me for now. Learn the ropes.”
Xing Nuo nodded and, seeing Assistant Ke sit down at the next desk, also climbed onto his swivel chair with some difficulty.
His little legs dangling in the air, he took out a jelly candy and offered it to Assistant Ke, who was printing some documents.
“Assistant Ke, you want?”
Assistant Ke chuckled, pushing up his glasses.
“Trying to bribe me, Little Assistant?”
Xing Nuo quickly shook his head, took the candy back, and popped it into his mouth.
“No. I’m a fair child. No bwibes.”
Assistant Ke handed him a few printed documents.
“Xing Nuo can wead now, wight?”
Xing Nuo nodded, eager to prove his usefulness.
“I know many words now! Can count to five hundwed!”
Assistant Ke, reassured, placed the documents on Xing Nuo’s desk and showed him how to arrange them in order.
Xing Nuo, looking at the small numbers on the bottom of each page, patted his chest confidently.
“I can do it! Vewy easy!”
Assistant Ke also thought it was simple and watched as Xing Nuo carefully arranged the documents, nodding in satisfaction.
“Good. These need to be delivered to the meeting room. Just give them to me when you’re done.”
Xing Nuo, given a task, his face serious, nodded, feeling important.
“Okay!”
Assistant Ke went outside to answer a phone call, discussing Shen Yan’s afternoon schedule with the driver.
Xing Nuo, the little assistant, diligently sorted the documents.
After about fifteen minutes, he wiped the sweat from his forehead and sighed.
He looked around, but Assistant Ke was gone.
He jumped down from his chair and searched the office, but couldn’t find him.
Where did he go?
He looked at the documents on his desk, wondering what to do, when another secretary, rushing out of the meeting room, called out:
“Where’s the assistant with the documents? The meeting is almost over! We need those files!”
Xing Nuo’s heart jumped, and he spun around, then, grabbing the documents, ran after the secretary.
“Coming! Coming!” he yelled, his curls bouncing.
The secretary, reaching the meeting room door, saw a small child at her feet.
“Huh? Who are you?”
Xing Nuo pointed at his ID card.
“I’m the assistant…with the documents.”
The secretary, having never seen Xing Nuo before, her face filled with confusion, gasped.
“You’re the assistant?!”
Xing Nuo nodded and, squeezing past her, hurried into the meeting room to deliver the files.
