Chapter 155
Shen Yan was patting the little one’s back, soothing him to sleep, when he heard Xing Nuo’s suggestion and paused.
“That’s…not very practical.”
Building an amusement park inside the company? The space wasn’t suitable.
Xing Nuo tilted his head, puzzled. “Why? Our school has small playground…everyone plays there after class.”
“Big Brother, your company has so many people…if build amusement park…everyone will come play!”
Shen Yan, his lips curving into a faint smile, instead of directly dismissing the idea, asked:
“But how can we be sure…people will come? And if we charge money…people won’t want to come.”
Xing Nuo didn’t understand these grown-up concerns and frowned.
“Big Brother, when people gwow up…they no like play anymore?”
Wouldn’t that be boring?
Shen Yan, a seasoned corporate worker, still found humans to be complex creatures.
“Grown-up world…not as fun as children’s.”
Xing Nuo, sleepy now, mumbled something Shen Yan couldn’t hear.
He tucked Xing Nuo in and, smiling faintly, quietly left the room.
Xing Nuo woke up, washed his face, and returned to his desk.
That afternoon, he finally finished reviewing the company documents and, using a combination of pinyin and Chinese characters, wrote down his suggestions.
He presented the document to Shen Yan, standing before him, his face serious.
“Mr. Shen, pwease weview.”
Shen Yan, amused by the little one’s serious demeanor, quickly scanned the two-hundred-word document.
“Company supewmarket no sell sticky candy and cwispy sticks. Only coffee machine, no ice cweam machine. Outside plaza only has fountain. Suggest build slide…for Little Vice Pwesident’s entertainment.”
Shen Yan, after reading it, was silent for a moment, then put the document aside.
“Okay, I’ve received your suggestions.”
Xing Nuo nodded, reminding him:
“I thought vewy hard…these are constwuctive suggestions. Hope Mr. Shen will consider.”
He emphasized the word “constructive,” showcasing his professionalism.
Shen Yan nodded, his fingers steepled, his voice reassuring.
“Don’t worry. Our company has a very thorough review process. If your suggestions are suitable, we’ll implement them immediately.”
Of course, Xing Nuo’s suggestions would probably be rejected in the initial review stage.
Xing Nuo, oblivious, beamed and nodded.
“Okay. Then I finish work now!”
Shen Yan, still having work to do, said:
“Tell Shen Baizhou to drive slowly. And wear your helmet.”
Xing Nuo nodded, waved at his brother, and, his important work completed, his heart light, skipped out of the office.
Having diligently worked for several days, Xing Nuo, believing he had made significant contributions to the company’s development, had also completed his week-long internship.
He packed his little backpack, gave his stickers to Assistant Ke, and said:
“Assistant Ke, stickers for you. Use them when you pwint.”
Assistant Ke, having grown fond of the little one during the past week, ruffled his hair and hugged him.
“Thank you, Xing Nuo.”
Xing Nuo also shared his cookies with the other assistants and secretaries, receiving several cheek pinches in return, and, waving goodbye, left the company.
Shen Baizhou, waiting for him on his scooter, saw Xing Nuo emerge from the crowd of suited professionals, his small form and casual attire a stark contrast to their formal wear.
He smiled and waved, calling out:
“Over here!”
Xing Nuo weaved through the crowd and ran towards him.
“Big Brother!”
He climbed onto the scooter and said happily:
“My internship finished! Tomowwow…west day! No work!”
Shen Baizhou chuckled and clapped.
“Good. Now you have experience…for when you graduate university.”
Xing Nuo giggled, enjoying the warm evening breeze on his face as they rode home.
At the playground in their complex, An Zimuo was playing hide-and-seek with the other children.
Seeing Xing Nuo arrive on the scooter, he ran over, panting.
“Xing Nuo! Xing Nuo! Come play!”
Xing Nuo, having been busy with his internship, hadn’t played with his friends for days.
He patted his brother’s shoulder, handed him his backpack, and pointed towards An Zimuo.
“Big Brother, I go play now!”
Shen Baizhou slung the backpack over his shoulder and hummed.
“Come home before dark. We have your favorite soup tonight.”
Xing Nuo nodded eagerly and ran towards An Zimuo, waving at his brother.
An Zimuo, wiping his sweaty forehead, seeing Xing Nuo, said:
“Xing Nuo, where were you? I went to youw house…but you not there!”
Xing Nuo, standing in the shade of a tree, his breath warm in the cool air, fanned himself with his hand and said:
“I did my homework! Worked at Big Brother’s company!”
An Zimuo’s face paled, and he started muttering, “Oh no.”
“I forgot ’bout homework! Teachew gave us assignment! What to do?!”
Xing Nuo, fanning himself with his hand, tied his hair into a small topknot to cool down, and asked:
“Zimuo, you finished other homework?”
An Zimuo’s dark face flushed, and he shook his head, embarrassed.
“Not yet.”
Xing Nuo sighed.
“Only half a month…till school stawts. Teacher will check.”
An Zimuo tried to sound optimistic.
“It’s okay. Still have fifteen days. I play for five days…then ten days enough!”
Xing Nuo remembered An Zimuo saying the same thing during winter break.
Five days…three days…two days…
And then, the day before school started, An Zimuo, his arms filled with unfinished homework, had cried and begged Xing Nuo for help.
Xing Nuo had let him copy his homework, but even then, they hadn’t finished, and An Zimuo had cried and written, working through the night.
Seeing An Zimuo about to repeat his mistake, Xing Nuo put his hands on his hips.
“You can’t do that again. I no let you copy.”
An Zimuo clasped his hands together, pleading.
“No, Xing Nuo! We best fwiends!”
Just then, a cold voice sounded from behind them:
“You not Xing Nuo’s best fwiend. I am.”
Lu Qi, bundled up in thick clothes despite the summer heat, almost as if he were wearing a mask, appeared out of nowhere.
An Zimuo, having been constantly annoyed by Lu Qi during the summer break, had initially tried to be patient with him, considering his tragic backstory.
But Lu Qi, like a stubborn mule, unappreciative and unresponsive, was infuriating!
“You liar! I’m Xing Nuo’s deskmate! Of course I’m his best fwiend!”
Lu Qi, his smile stiff and unnatural, said:
“A deskmate who copies homework?”
An Zimuo, enraged, yelled and stomped his foot.
Lu Qi walked over to Xing Nuo and, forcing a smile, said:
“Xing Nuo, I came to find you.”
Xing Nuo, exasperated by his two friends’ constant bickering, sighed and suggested:
“We play hide-and-seek…or ‘Red Light, Gween Light’…or go to slide?”
An Zimuo, hearing “play,” his earlier anger forgotten, said eagerly:
“Hide-and-seek! I’m vewy good at finding people! You two go hide! I’ll find you!”
Xing Nuo nodded, and, while An Zimuo covered his eyes and counted, he pulled Lu Qi’s hand.
“We hide quick! Zimuo will find us!”
Xing Nuo excitedly hid behind a large tree, peeking out occasionally to see if An Zimuo was coming.
Lu Qi stayed close behind him.
Xing Nuo, thinking it would be easier for them to be found if they hid together, said:
“Lu Qi, you hide behind diffe-went twee! If I’m found…you can wun away!”
Lu Qi shook his head, grabbing Xing Nuo’s arm, his eyes flickering with blue light, about to speak, when An Zimuo suddenly appeared.
“Found you! Hahaha!”
Seeing the blue light in Lu Qi’s eyes, his smile faltered, and he took a step back, his eyes wide with alarm.
“Wh-what’s happening?!”
He backed away, frantically gesturing for Xing Nuo to come with him.
Whenever Lu Qi’s circuits overloaded, his eyes would flicker with blue light, his biggest tell.
Xing Nuo, seeing An Zimuo’s fear, waved his hand, trying to explain.
“It’s okay. Lu Qi’s eyes…just diffe-went. He good boy!”
Lu Qi, hearing Xing Nuo defend him, his eyes softening, his expression less robotic, a flicker of warmth in his usually cold demeanor,
watched as An Zimuo, still suspicious, pulled Xing Nuo away.
“Xing Nuo, don’t play with him. He’s weird!”
Xing Nuo, being dragged away, tried to explain.
“Zimuo, you misunderstand Lu Qi…”
Lu Qi, standing in the shadows, watching Xing Nuo play with the other children in the sunlight, felt a pang of sadness.
