Chapter 158
Xing Nuo, clutching his mouth, dropped the cookie. Along with the cookie came a baby tooth and a mouthful of blood.
Shen Baizhou, his eyes wide with shock, gasped.
“Oh no! The cookie is poisonous! Xing Nuo is poisoned!”
Having experienced food poisoning himself, he was an expert on the subject.
He panicked, scooped up Xing Nuo, and yelled:
“Let’s go! To the hospital!”
An Zimuo, who had been about to take a bite of a cookie, quickly dropped it, seeing Xing Nuo spitting out blood, and started wailing.
“What do we do?! Is Xing Nuo going to die?!”
He rubbed his eyes, his voice filled with tears and self-reproach.
“It’s all my fault! I shouldn’t have tried to bake cookies! Now Xing Nuo is poisoned! Waaah!”
Xing Nuo, who hadn’t felt that bad initially, seeing the blood on the tissue, his head spinning, suddenly felt weak and dizzy.
“My head dizzy…”
I’m dying.
He thought, tears welling up in his eyes, his vision blurring, and he rubbed his eyes with his hand.
“Big Brother, if I…go bye-bye…you and Daddy…live well…”
Shen Baizhou’s heart sank. He grabbed his phone and, gently stroking Xing Nuo’s head, said:
“Don’t worry, you’ll be fine!”
Shen Yan, working late at the company, received Shen Baizhou’s call and asked, surprised:
“Why are you calling?”
Shen Baizhou’s voice trembled, and he took a deep breath before speaking.
“Bro, Xing Nuo…he’s spitting up blood.”
Shen Yan’s face hardened, his heart clenching.
“I’ll send the driver. Go to the hospital. Now.”
The hospital, having received a generous donation of medical equipment from Shen Yan, had maintained a good relationship with him.
Hearing that CEO Shen’s little brother had food poisoning, they immediately assembled a team of specialists.
Shen Yan’s driver, with Shen Baizhou carrying Xing Nuo and a frantic An Zimuo, who insisted on coming, sped towards the hospital.
At the hospital, Xing Nuo lay on a small bed in the examination room, undergoing various tests.
The doctor, looking at the results, his brow furrowed, was puzzled.
Xing Nuo, climbing off the bed, coughing weakly, asked:
“Doctor Uncle, am I…going to die?”
The doctor stroked his chin.
“Open your mouth, let me check.”
Xing Nuo sat down and obediently opened his mouth.
The doctor, using a small penlight, examined his mouth carefully, then nodded, pushing up his glasses.
“Have your brother come in.”
Xing Nuo nodded and went to get Shen Baizhou.
Shen Baizhou rushed in. “Doctor, is my brother…is he…?”
The doctor, looking at Shen Baizhou, suppressing a smile, coughed and said:
“He’s fine. Just losing a baby tooth. Have to be careful with sweets after that.”
Shen Baizhou, about to say something, then paused.
“Losing a tooth?!”
The doctor nodded. “Yes, losing a baby tooth.”
He then asked, “Didn’t you lose any teeth when you were young?”
Shen Baizhou and Xing Nuo, their faces blank, exchanged glances, looking utterly bewildered.
Then, Xing Nuo, revealing the gap where his tooth had been, was about to smile when he remembered something and quickly covered his mouth.
“My head not dizzy anymore!” He shook his head, suddenly feeling perfectly fine.
Shen Baizhou, realizing his mistake, smacked Xing Nuo’s head lightly, then sighed, shaking his head.
“You scared me! Just losing a tooth.”
He had thought Xing Nuo had not only inherited Shen Wen’s beauty but also his “poisonous” cooking skills!
A single cookie, almost fatal.
Shen Baizhou, having been Shen Wen’s unwilling taste tester for years, his stomach now hardened, was a regular at the gastroenterology department.
But then, remembering the rock-hard cookies Xing Nuo had made, he thought, Maybe he did inherit some of Shen Wen’s cooking skills after all.
Xing Nuo giggled, covering his mouth, and went to rinse his mouth, as instructed by the doctor.
He rinsed and rinsed, and the bleeding stopped.
Shen Yan, arriving a bit later, his face filled with concern, rushed over and hugged Xing Nuo, checking him over.
“Are you okay? What did the doctor say?”
Xing Nuo, his speech slightly slurred from the missing tooth, mumbled, “Doctow Uncle said…lost tooth.”
Shen Yan turned to Shen Baizhou, who was shrinking back, looking guilty.
Shen Baizhou, the silver-haired teenager, sat up straight and said defensively:
“How was I supposed to know it was a loose tooth? He was spitting up blood! It was scary!”
As an octopus, he had never experienced losing teeth, his beak easily crushing anything.
Shen Yan, not bothering to argue with him, asked the doctor for some advice, then, reassured, said:
“Let’s go home. Get some rest. And no more cold or sweet treats.”
Xing Nuo nodded and, holding his brother’s hand, went home with An Zimuo.
An Zimuo, intimidated by the stern-faced Shen Yan, didn’t dare speak, afraid of being blamed for the cookie-baking incident and Xing Nuo’s chipped tooth.
Especially after hearing Shen Yan’s cold, sharp voice on the phone during the car ride home, his tone icy as he scolded someone:
“Is this the report you submitted? Where’s the data? Did you even conduct any field research? How dare you submit this to me?!”
An Zimuo shrank back, hiding behind Xing Nuo.
Xing Nuo, not having had his nap, his head nodding sleepily, rubbed his eyes, his curls turning into a bird’s nest.
Seeing An Zimuo hiding behind him, he patted his arm sleepily, trying to comfort him.
“Don’t worry, Zimuo. Cookies not poisonous.”
An Zimuo, touched, was about to thank him when he saw Shen Yan’s gaze and quickly shut his mouth.
Shen Yan, ignoring An Zimuo, looked at Xing Nuo, his sleepy eyes drooping, and covered him with a blanket.
His expression softening, his voice gentle, he said:
“Shh, let Xing Nuo sleep.”
An Zimuo, looking at Shen Yan’s gentle expression, was stunned for a moment, then nodded.
“Okay.”
He was still slightly afraid of Shen Yan, but he seemed less intimidating now.
Xing Nuo slept until evening, the sky ablaze with sunset colors.
He woke up, yawning, and, seeing Shen Wen in the kitchen, examining the burnt cookies he had made, ran over.
“Daddy!”
Shen Wen, putting the cookies away in a box, his chin resting on his hand, smiled.
“Not bad for your first time. Almost as good as Daddy’s.”
Shen Baizhou wanted to say something, but seeing Shen Wen’s smug expression, he held his tongue.
Xing Nuo, embarrassed, took the cookies and threw them away.
“Still not good. Making cookies so hard!”
But he had enjoyed the experience, and despite the inedible cookies, he had been praised by his family.
Even Qi Yao, whom he met downstairs while throwing away the cookies, hadn’t teased him.
“Xing Nuo made cookies? Not bad, not bad. A bit burnt, but still look like cookies.”
Xing Nuo smiled. “Next time I make good ones…give Uncle to eat!”
His missing tooth made his pronunciation slightly slurred.
He covered his mouth and ran upstairs to check his teeth in the mirror.
For the rest of the summer break, he would check his teeth every morning, hoping for a new one to appear.
Finally, just before school started, a tiny tooth bud emerged.
The small, white tooth, peeking through his pink gums, made him so happy, he brushed his teeth ten times a day, eager for it to grow.
September. School started.
Shen Baizhou had to live in the dorms at his university, but fortunately, it was still in Rongcheng, so he could come home on weekends.
He dragged his suitcase, his backpack slung over his shoulder, his hand holding Xing Nuo’s, as they went to register.
Xing Nuo, his first time at a university, his eyes wide with curiosity, looked at the crowds and gasped.
“So many people! Big Brother, g-wown-ups go to school too?”
He looked at the older students, puzzled.
Shen Baizhou hummed and explained:
“This is university. When Xing Nuo grows up, you’ll come here too…learn new things.”
Xing Nuo tilted his head.
“Learn how to make cookies?”
Shen Baizhou nodded. “Of course! University has everything!”
There were baking and pastry classes, even nutrition classes, where they learned how to cook all sorts of dishes.
Xing Nuo, looking at the university gates with anticipation, held his brother’s hand as they reached the registration desk and called out politely:
“Hello~”
The senior students, hearing the sweet little voice, looked up.
Seeing the small child, peeking out from behind his brother, a female student smiled and pinched Xing Nuo’s cheek playfully.
“Here with your family?”
Xing Nuo nodded, looking at his brother, who was dragging his suitcase.
Shen Baizhou hummed. “Where do we register?”
The senior student, seeing Shen Baizhou, his silver hair, his lazy demeanor, his aloof and nonchalant attitude, her eyes lit up, and she nudged her friend, who was recording information.
“Over here. What’s your name?”
“Shen Baizhou.”
Xing Nuo, looking up, watching as the big sister wrote down his brother’s name, relieved, tugged on his brother’s hand.
“Finished! Big Brother, we go to class now?”
Shen Baizhou, having received his dorm key, was about to answer when the enthusiastic senior student said:
“No classes for the first two days. Orientation and military training first. You don’t know where the dorms are, right? I’ll show you!”
