Chapter 170
Xing Nuo, having slept too much at the hospital during the day, couldn’t fall asleep at night.
He rubbed his eyes, his face sleepy, but his mind still active, like a flickering candle flame.
He got out of bed, wanting a snack.
Something cool and sweet.
He opened his bedroom door and saw Shen Wen in the dimly lit living room, his eyes blazing, a small wooden sword in his hand, lunging at something.
The sword pierced the air with a soft thud.
Wen Xingxue dodged quickly, but the sword still grazed his leg, drawing blood.
“You’re ruthless,” he hissed, his usually gloomy face contorted in pain, but also with a strange sense of satisfaction.
Shen Wen, seeing this, his anger flaring, not noticing Xing Nuo standing at the doorway, raised his sword again.
“Let go of my hand!” he said through gritted teeth, his face flushed.
Wen Xingxue, still holding Shen Wen’s hand tightly, didn’t listen.
“I’ve been stabbed. I deserve some compensation, don’t I?”
Before Shen Wen could explode, he gently caressed the back of his hand, his voice a low chuckle.
“See? You’re not even aiming for my chest anymore.”
“You care about me.”
Shen Wen’s mind reeled, then exploded with anger.
He stabbed at Wen Xingxue again, but the sword missed, hitting his abdomen instead.
Wen Xingxue, his light-colored clothes stained with blood, didn’t leave, his gaze fixed on Shen Wen, as if memorizing his face in the dim light.
“I’m leaving. Need to recover. Don’t talk to anyone else.”
Having finally acknowledged his feelings, his former hatred for Shen Wen had transformed into a burning passion.
His gaze, intense and possessive, made Shen Wen want to kill him.
“Get out!”
Wen Xingxue quickly vanished.
If he stayed any longer, he would bleed to death.
Shen Wen, panting, his anger making him lose control, finally noticed Xing Nuo standing at the doorway.
He froze, then reassured himself, Xing Nuo can’t see him. It’s okay.
But Xing Nuo could see him.
Something in his mind, like a sudden spark, a phantom heartbeat, had opened his eyes to the usually invisible Wen Xingxue.
His two daddies were fighting.
A serious fight, blood everywhere.
Xing Nuo, his mind reeling, thought, Other kids’ parents might not be lovey-dovey, but they don’t stab each other, right?
His daddies must really hate each other!
He forced a smile, his face paler than if he were crying, his voice soft and small.
“Daddy, you okay?”
Shen Wen shook his head, meticulously wiped his wooden sword with a cloth, and put it away.
“I’m fine. Why aren’t you sleeping, Xing Nuo?”
Xing Nuo shook his head, went to get a glass of water, drank it all, and his mind cleared slightly.
“I slept too much during the day. Can’t sleep.”
Shen Wen walked over, nuzzled Xing Nuo’s cheek, his expression softening, his eyes gentle.
“Daddy will tell you a story, okay?”
Xing Nuo nodded. He had been planning to sneak out and get some ice cream, but now, his plan foiled, he climbed back into bed and listened to his dad’s story.
Halfway through the story, his mind still troubled, he suddenly asked:
“Daddy, what kind of people you like?”
Shen Wen, not thinking too deeply about the question, kissed Xing Nuo’s cheek, his voice soft.
“Of course, well-behaved, cute little boys like Xing Nuo.”
Xing Nuo’s heart sank.
Transparent Daddy not well-behaved…not cute…and not little boy!
He sighed softly, his little head filled with worries, then, exhausted, drifted off to sleep before he could even finish his yawn.
The next day, a Saturday, no school, Xing Nuo, after a quick breakfast of steamed custard buns and soy milk, eagerly grabbed his little basket and went to the alley to find Lu Qi.
He had planned to share his mushrooms with Lu Qi.
He reached the alley and called Lu Qi’s name, but there was no response.
He waited patiently for almost an hour, until the sun was high in the sky, the sounds of children playing echoing from the nearby streets, but Lu Qi didn’t appear.
Lu Qi must be busy. Didn’t hear me.
He sighed and, looking back repeatedly, returned home.
Shen Yan, on vacation, his sleeves rolled up, had prepared a mushroom feast for lunch.
Fried mushrooms, mushroom soup, stir-fried mushrooms, mushroom meatballs…
He had used all the mushrooms Xing Nuo had brought back, not a single one left.
Xing Nuo, his tummy full and round, rubbing it contentedly, looked inside the basket and found a tiny mushroom, smaller than his thumb, hidden in a corner.
It was so small that Shen Yan had overlooked it.
He put the tiny mushroom in his backpack, planning to give it to Lu Qi when he saw him.
But Lu Qi didn’t appear for several days.
And that wasn’t his only worry. Xing Nuo, sitting in a milk tea shop, his chin resting on his hand, looking at his dad, who was usually invisible but now visible, sighed.
“Daddy, I no have money…buy you milk tea.”
Wen Xingxue took out a crumpled ten-yuan bill.
He had been a poor student before entering the horror world.
He was wealthy in the horror world, but his props and energy stones couldn’t be used in the real world.
So, they could only afford one cup of milk tea.
But Xing Nuo was happy. Ten yuan!
They could get the large size!
He sipped the milk tea through a straw, the boba popping in his mouth, his first milk tea in weeks, and sighed happily.
“Daddy always sprays nice-smelling water. When I gwow up…I spray milk tea scent.”
Wen Xingxue chuckled, ruffling Xing Nuo’s hair, amused by the thought of a grown-up Xing Nuo smelling of milk tea.
“Okay. Daddy will research…make milk tea pewfume for Xing Nuo.”
Xing Nuo giggled, then, after a few sips, his tummy full, his cheeks puffed out slightly, he asked:
“Daddy, why you here?”
Wen Xingxue, remembering his purpose, his ears turning slightly pink, coughed and said:
“Xing Nuo, should I ask Daddy…to go to the movies…in a few days?”
Having never dated before, he was nervous and unsure, seeking Xing Nuo’s approval.
Xing Nuo, his nose wrinkling slightly, looking at the bandage on his dad’s abdomen, where he had been stabbed, was silent for a moment.
He shook his head hesitantly.
“Maybe not.”
Hadn’t he been stabbed enough already?
Wen Xingxue, however, determined to proceed with his date plan, his pale lips pressed together, said after a moment of thought:
“We’ll go tomorrow!”
Xing Nuo gasped, his eyes wide, looking at his dad, wanting to ask:
Are you sure you want to risk your life?
He sighed, clutching his milk tea, a bribe from his dad, and slowly walked home.
He changed his shoes, finished his homework, and, after much hesitation, walked over to his dad, who was arranging flowers.
Shen Wen had noticed the little one’s furtive glances, but he hadn’t said anything.
Xing Nuo, fidgeting, looked up at his dad.
“Daddy, you fwee tomowwow?”
Shen Wen, looking at his anxious expression, his lips twitching, trying not to smile, said:
“Yes, what is it, Xing Nuo?”
Xing Nuo hummed, then blurted out:
“Twanspaw-went Daddy asked…go to movies…Daddy, we go together?”
Shen Wen’s smile faltered, and he patted Xing Nuo’s cheek, telling him to go watch TV.
Xing Nuo nodded, then, turning back, his voice filled with concern, said:
“Daddy, no fight, okay?”
Shen Wen smiled, his beautiful face like a poisonous datura flower.
“Don’t worry, Daddy won’t fight.”
Xing Nuo, reassured, smiled and ran off to watch cartoons.
The sky was clear and blue, not a single cloud in sight.
Xing Nuo woke up early, put on his beige overalls, the little teddy bear patch bobbing on his chest, his curls bouncing, and asked:
“Daddy, what movie we watch?”
It was his first time going to the movies with both his daddies!
Shen Wen shook his head, his voice cool and clear.
“I don’t know.”
They arrived at the movie theater, which was almost empty in the early morning, just the three of them, and a translucent figure who arrived a bit later.
Xing Nuo was about to call out to him when he saw the ticket seller looking at them, so he quickly closed his mouth, not wanting to draw attention.
Wen Xingxue, limping slightly, his arm in a sling, but still smiling, looked at Shen Wen and Xing Nuo.
Shen Wen, his expression impatient, looked at Wen Xingxue and said coldly:
“You asked us to the movies. What are we watching? And where are the tickets?”
Wen Xingxue, reminded, realized his mistake.
“I forgot. Need tickets in real world.”
He turned to buy tickets, his limp slowing him down, and Shen Wen, annoyed, said:
“Can you even buy them? They can’t see you!”
He walked past Wen Xingxue and bought three tickets.
Wen Xingxue chuckled, his usually gloomy face softening, his eyes sparkling.
“Thank you.”
Shen Wen, irritated by his amusement, but seeing Xing Nuo’s eager expression, his eyes fixed on the tickets, just ignored him.
They entered the theater.
Shen Wen also bought a small bucket of popcorn, took a bite, frowned, and put it aside.
Xing Nuo, however, loved it, the sweet, crunchy popcorn making his eyes crinkle into a happy smile.
But after a few handfuls, Shen Wen took it away.
“Can’t eat too much. Remember last time? Sore throat from too many snacks.”
Xing Nuo, wanting more, nuzzled his dad’s arm, his voice sweet and pleading.
“Just two more, pwease?”
Shen Wen, unmoved, said firmly, “No.”
Xing Nuo turned to Wen Xingxue, his eyes wide and pleading.
Wen Xingxue, seeing Shen Wen’s warning glare, said:
“Listen to your daddy! No more popcorn!”
Xing Nuo’s world crumbled.
He stared at his transparent daddy, his eyes wide with shock and betrayal.
“Daddy, you changed!”
