Chapter 175
Xing Nuo sat on the wall, watching helplessly as the injured university student fell, too far away to reach her.
As her screams echoed through the air, he heard the familiar beep, beep of his scooter.
Isn’t that my scooter?
He opened his eyes and saw Shen Baizhou, wearing his duck helmet, riding towards the pregnant monster.
The pregnant monster, her mouth open wide, a dark, gaping maw, looked at the approaching scooter, not seeing it as a threat.
She lunged at him, but as she got closer, she felt a powerful, oppressive aura emanating from Shen Baizhou.
A suffocating, terrifying presence, like the crushing depths of the ocean, a cold, salty wave threatening to engulf her, pulling her down, down, down, into the abyss.
She gasped, choking, and stumbled back, collapsing to the ground.
She struggled, then sat up, retching.
As everyone watched, she vomited a stream of fleshy, red lumps, some still vaguely resembling human limbs.
The university student, also gagging, covered her mouth, her stomach churning.
The pregnant woman vomited for almost five minutes, the grotesque meat lumps piling up around her, her belly shrinking like a deflated balloon.
The meat lumps, squirming on the ground, their voices a chorus of “Mommy!”, reached for her.
Xing Nuo, having jumped down from the wall, realizing the monster’s weakness, ignoring the gruesome sight, stomped on a meat lump, crushing it under his foot.
It dissolved into a bloody mist, and the pregnant woman’s face paled.
“Quick! The meat lumps are her weakness!”
The others, seeing this, also started stomping on the creatures, which, despite their grotesque appearance, were weak and posed no threat compared to the pregnant monster.
The pregnant woman, watching them destroy her “children,” screamed, her voice shrill and piercing, echoing through the night.
“Those are mine! I worked so hard to get them! How dare you?!”
She lunged at the university student, who, dodging clumsily, her hand shooting out instinctively, unleashed a small fireball.
The fireball, although small, hit the pregnant woman, burning her skin.
The university student, stunned, looked at her hand, her eyes wide with shock, confusion, and a flicker of excitement.
Xing Nuo, having crushed several meat lumps, also saw the fireball,
but he wasn’t surprised. He blinked, then continued stomping on the creatures.
The monster’s strength came from the meat lumps she had consumed, and now, with them gone, she was weaker than an ordinary human.
Xing Nuo, panting, wiping the sweat from his face, looked towards his brother, who had parked his scooter nearby.
Shen Baizhou, taking off his helmet, seeing Xing Nuo, grinned and walked towards him, his hands in his pockets.
“Xing Nuo, you okay?” He pinched Xing Nuo’s cheek playfully.
He loved pinching his little brother’s soft, warm cheeks, their texture so different from his own cold skin.
It was strangely satisfying.
Even though Xing Nuo had grown taller, he was still shorter than Shen Baizhou and had to tilt his head back, protesting:
“Stop pinching my face! I’m a grown-up now!”
Shen Baizhou, ignoring him, looked him over, making sure he wasn’t injured, and chuckled.
“Still a little kid.”
Xing Nuo, rubbing his cheek, which now had a faint red mark, mumbled something under his breath,
then, remembering something, asked:
“Big Brother, why you here?”
Shen Baizhou, looking at the carnage, the pregnant monster cowering in fear, grinned, his tone casual.
“School ends at nine. It’s already nine-thirty. You weren’t back yet. Had to come find you.”
He pointed. “Your scooter at the alley. I was worried…came looking.”
Xing Nuo, although still slightly puzzled, trusted his brother and nodded, then looked at the other people, who were slumped against the wall, exhausted and terrified.
“What we do now?”
The pregnant monster, her “children” destroyed, huddled in a corner, her body smaller now, trembling as if under some unseen pressure.
Just then, a group of people in camouflage uniforms jumped over the wall.
Qi Yao, their leader, ran towards them and, without a word, raised his hand, and a bolt of lightning struck the pregnant monster, turning her into a puff of black smoke.
Xing Nuo, witnessing the scene, like something out of a sci-fi movie, stared, then looked up at Qi Yao.
Qi Yao, panting, his uniform stained with blood and grime, his face grim, looked at the others, then, seeing Xing Nuo and Shen Baizhou, his eyes widened in surprise.
“Xing Nuo?”
Xing Nuo asked politely:
“Uncle Qi, why you here? What happened?”
The moon hung high in the sky.
The summer night air was thick and muggy, making them irritable.
At the SIA reception room.
Xing Nuo and the others were being debriefed, signing non-disclosure agreements.
The young couple and the older couple, clearly traumatized, eager to leave, quickly signed the forms, promising not to reveal anything, and hurried away.
Xing Nuo sat quietly, carefully reading the agreement, his brow furrowed, his long eyelashes casting shadows on his cheeks.
Qi Yao brought them some tea and asked:
“I’ve heard what happened. Any questions?”
The university student, clutching her injured arm, asked eagerly:
“What was that? Was that pregnant woman a monster? And why did a fireball come out of my hand?”
Qi Yao took a sip of water, coughed, and said:
“As you’ve seen, there are monsters hiding in our world. And if you encounter them, you might be pulled into a dungeon.”
“There aren’t many ways for humans to fight monsters. You have to kill them to escape. As for the fireball…”
He paused, his gaze briefly lingering on Xing Nuo’s pale face.
“You’ve probably awakened your ability.”
The university student, having suspected this, the day’s events far beyond her understanding, sat there, deep in thought.
Shen Baizhou, having signed the agreement, placed the pen and paper on the table and looked down at his little brother.
“Xing Nuo? Finished?”
Xing Nuo, snapping out of his trance, hummed and placed his signed agreement on the table.
“Uncle Qi, it’s late. We should go home now.”
Qi Yao looked at Xing Nuo, the once small, clumsy child now a polite and well-mannered teenager, and felt a pang of something akin to paternal pride. He nodded.
“Okay. You must be scared. But this is just the beginning. There will be more incidents like this. It’s good that you experienced this early. It might help you awaken your ability sooner.”
Ability users were much stronger than ordinary humans.
He had assumed Xing Nuo would also awaken his ability, but seeing no obvious changes, he just reminded them to be careful on their way home.
Xing Nuo, however, his heart heavy, asked before leaving:
“Monsters…everywhere now?”
Had their peaceful world been invaded?
Or was the peace just a facade, the reality a monster’s playground?
Qi Yao sighed. Although he wasn’t supposed to reveal too much, he still said:
“Not yet, but at this rate, it’s only a matter of time.”
Xing Nuo, his face grim, his mind in turmoil, walked out, looking at the few twinkling stars in the night sky.
The familiar mechanical beep echoed in his mind, but he ignored it and climbed onto the scooter.
“Let’s go home,” he said quietly.
Shen Baizhou rode home, carrying his little brother.
Xing Nuo, after finishing his homework late at night, his head dizzy and throbbing, as if something was trying to break free,
woke up the next morning, his face slightly pale, but otherwise normal.
He didn’t ask Shen Baizhou why he had arrived so quickly, or why the monster had been so easily defeated.
He just quietly finished his breakfast and was about to leave for school when Shen Baizhou placed a small pendant around his neck.
Shen Baizhou, dark circles under his eyes, his face tired, his voice slightly hoarse, said:
“I made this last night. It’s getting more dangerous. This will protect you.”
Xing Nuo touched the smooth, jade-like pendant and smiled, hugging his brother.
Like when he was younger, he nuzzled his brother’s cheek affectionately and said, “Okay.”
“I go to school now, Big Brother. You no skip work today. Remember last month…no money?”
He grabbed his backpack and, as Shen Baizhou chuckled, waved goodbye, his smile bright and cheerful, and left for school.
The morning air was cool and refreshing, and as Xing Nuo rode his scooter, he exhaled, the lingering fear dissipating with his breath.
He turned towards his school, ready to face another day.
Xing Nuo still talks like a child, missing particles
