Chapter 18: Summon Someone

What kind of accident could happen in an elevator?

Based on Sharp Head’s death process, Jiang Wuning guessed it would either be a high-speed fall or the doors suddenly opening or closing as someone was entering or exiting.

She stood a few steps back from the door, her mind on high alert. Should anything happen inside or outside the elevator, she’d have time to react.

However, things didn’t go as she expected. The elevator stopped on the 7th floor. Nothing happened. The 6th floor, nothing happened. It went on stopping floor by floor like this, and no accident ever occurred.

The elevator had no accident, so Jiang Wuning was the one who found it surprising. After all, given her current mental state, encountering something would be the normal thing.

But that wasn’t important. She had reached the first floor and needed to get out.

An elevator stopping on every floor certainly wasn’t as smooth as a direct ride, but Sister Liu was indifferent to everything. She just glanced at it twice and paid no more attention.

She planned to ride the elevator a couple more times anyway, so she didn’t intend to get out on the first floor. She silently watched Jiang Wuning, waiting for her to leave.

However, this person didn’t just seem blind—her legs didn’t seem to work right either. When she lifted her foot, she had to kick it out twice before she could step forward.

Sister Liu: “…”

Remembering Little Xu’s instructions, Sister Liu decided to help out. Besides, even though this person seemed blind and crippled in the legs, she was still smiling. An optimistic person, she looked approachable.

Jiang Wuning kicked away the hands grabbing her ankles and dodged the hanging female corpses as she walked out. These things were still trying to influence her.

Just as she reached the doorway, a hand suddenly grabbed her arm. But instead of trying to keep her there, it pulled her along outside.

The building was dark, and Jiang Wuning was in a dizzy state, seeing only vague outlines of everything. But there wasn’t even a shadow beside her.

Jiang Wuning followed the pull of that hand without showing any reaction, realizing it was actually leading her outside. Judging by the direction, it should be toward the dormitory.

Jiang Wuning thought of Xu Xiye’s voice she heard on the 8th floor. It seemed there was another voice responding to him back then.

This wasn’t an anomalous phenomenon, but some kind of Anomaly.

Jiang Wuning didn’t resist, just following the pull of that hand outward.

Outside the office building, Wang Xiaodian and Little Li sat on the edge of the flower bed, each lost in their own thoughts. Lu Neng and Li Qing occasionally looked up, trying to see any signs of movement from above.

Wang Xiaodian said to Little Li, “You’re pretty lucky. You met my Shifu at the critical moment. If I’d seen your corpse hanging there, I wouldn’t dare sit in your spot tomorrow.”

Little Li: “Mm. Brother Xu is a really good person. He even let me follow him.”

Wang Xiaodian muttered, “Of course my Shifu is a good person. Told you so long ago.”

But Wang Xiaodian saw it more clearly than Little Li did. What “let him follow”? Naturally, in that situation, you couldn’t just leave someone alone. But his Shifu did find it troublesome.

See? The moment he ran into them, he dumped Little Li on them.

And that time in the restroom, when he’d tearfully confessed to his Shifu that he was pregnant, his Shifu had been shocked and concerned. But as soon as Jiang Wuning showed up, he’d thrown them at her and run off.

Just now, he’d mentioned his belly was getting bigger, and his Shifu had just ignored him.

Wang Xiaodian touched his belly with a rather pitiful air. However, his Shifu looked young. It was hard to say whether he was older or younger than him. He definitely wasn’t the mother-hen type, so it was normal for him to find trouble bothersome.

It seemed that next time he wanted to stick close to his Shifu, he couldn’t have trouble clinging to him. He’d have to be able to run errands and get things done… No, no, no. No next time, no next time. He was just talking nonsense.

Little Li lowered his head. Wang Xiaodian had indeed told him something similar before, but he’d already been influenced back then and hadn’t taken Wang Xiaodian’s words to heart.

Just as he was steeped in regret, his arm was suddenly grabbed. Immediately after came Wang Xiaodian’s trembling voice: “L-look, look! Shoes, those shoes are walking by themselves! B-beside the shoes, there’s someone else!”

Little Li looked over. Under the moonlight, there truly was a pair of shoes walking. And beside the shoes, there was a figure that looked like a woman.

Little Li’s already pale face instantly turned even whiter. Combined with the horrific dark purple strangulation mark around his neck, he looked scarier than a ghost.

Just as terror was about to crawl all over him, Little Li’s sharp eyes made out the approaching figure clearly. “I-it’s Sister Ning.”

“Right, right, it’s Sister Ning. Even if it wasn’t Sister Ning, it’s nothing terrifying. Chill, chill. My Shifu said who she was—right, Sister Liu. It must be that my Shifu asked Sister Liu to bring her over,” Wang Xiaodian quickly reasoned. But he was still afraid. No one else could understand the sheer terror those old cloth shoes held for him in a place like this.

Lu Neng and Li Qing also saw them. They immediately went over to meet them.

As they approached, Jiang Wuning felt the hand gripping her release.

“Sister Ning!”

Hearing Li Qing and Lu Neng’s voices, Jiang Wuning relaxed a little. But she truly looked terrible.

Her face was pale, strands of hair sticking to her sweat-dampened cheeks. She was breathing rapidly, clearly exhausted. Lu Neng and Li Qing each immediately took one side to support her. “Sister Ning, what happened? Are you okay?”

Jiang Wuning didn’t make a sound. Her head was buzzing, a chaotic mess. Lu Neng and Li Qing helped her over to the flower bed where Wang Xiaodian and the others were and sat her down.

Jiang Wuning leaned straight back against the shrubs in the flower bed, gasping for air heavily. Only after leaving the building did those chaotic, sharp sounds gradually fade away.

After she caught her breath somewhat and recovered some mental strength, she spoke: “The Pollution Source is upstairs. Call He Sui. See if he can come.”

The Pollution Source had been found. If it could be eliminated, it needed to be done as soon as possible. Otherwise, what was a hallway of corpses tonight could be an entire floor tomorrow night. And as time went on, it would expand downwards.

If He Sui didn’t come, they would have to figure out a way to find the Pollution Source during the day.

If they couldn’t find it… then they’d all be buried here.

The Working Anomaly is Looking for a Job Again

打工诡异又要找工作了
Status: Ongoing Native Language: Chinese

Xu Xiye is an ordinary office worker. Under immense pressure, he can barely maintain his human form during the day, but at night, he just wants to crawl around everywhere.

There's nothing surprising about that; everyone does it. Crawling on doors, windows, ceilings—their ordinary lives pass by smoothly enough.

However, one day, a batch of Outsiders arrived in the city. They had strange habits, liking to shout at the top of their lungs with shrill voices, sprinting wildly in all directions, or curling up into a ball and trembling.

Xu Xiye didn't like it, but his curiosity got the better of him, and he went to take a look.

It was nothing much. A little baby crawled out of its mother's belly while she wasn't paying attention. The mother kept it tethered with the umbilical cord the whole time, so there was no need to worry about the child getting lost.

Oh, and there was a woman walking upside down. That was his Miss Neighbor. Xu Xiye often envied her long hair that dragged along the ground. Wherever it dragged, it cleaned. If possible, he wished Miss Neighbor would drag her hair through his hallway too.

He just couldn't understand the Outsiders. The good news was that he met a handsome man.

The man could always maintain a perfect human form and had a pair of beautiful silver-blue eyes. Xu Xiye liked him very much. He wanted to put him in his home.

So, in the quiet midnight, he crouched on the man's window and knocked on the glass: "Hey, brother, do you want to move into my place?"

"Get down."

Getting down was fine, but he'd be back.

This was just a small setback. Life's journey was still long. However, one morning as he was heading to work as usual, he saw his company reduced to ruins by an explosion.

Xu Xiye: "?"

Later, Xu Xiye got his wish and brought the man home. He just didn't understand why his workplace kept getting blown up.

His suspicious gaze turned to the man beside him.

He Sui: "..." Xu Xiye sighed with worry: "It's so hard to find a stable job." He Sui: "I have money."

~

He Sui, the strongest Ability User in the Investigations Division. Handsome, unrestrained, and a maverick. Before killing a Pollution Source, he'd first transfer his salary. Earning money so he could spend it freely.

At first, he thought Xu Xiye was just a somewhat special, ordinary Anomaly. Later, he understood that Xu Xiye was the rule that maintained order for all Anomalies, their very sanity itself. When someone tried to hurt or destroy him, they would counterattack at all costs.

And He Sui was willing to become one of them.
