They arrived at the garrison camp in the afternoon. Under the Military District leader’s guidance, everyone headed to the Military District cafeteria for dinner before proceeding to the dormitory area for this sports meet.
Over half of the Entire Military District consisted of Alphas, with the rest being Betas.
Among the competing students, more than seventy percent were Alphas and less than thirty percent Betas.
In other words, among the tens of thousands of people now in the Military District, Mu Chenxing was the only Omega.
Moreover, due to the Military District’s unique nature, the entire area lacked any Omega-related pheromone devices—including Suppressants needed during Heat Periods, air exchange barriers, and the like.
The two hundred-plus competing students, along with over twenty teachers and medical staff, were all housed in a single dormitory building. Mu Chenxing and his two accompanying Beta teachers followed Fu Mingyuan to separate accommodations.
Mu Chenxing showed no concern about his own lodging and instead voiced his curiosity about something else. “What happens if an Alpha enters their Heat Period?”
Fu Mingyuan replied calmly from beside him. “Knock ’em out and toss ’em in the Medical Office.”
Mu Chenxing: “…With so many Alphas, doesn’t that mean someone goes into heat every day?”
“Of course.”
The accompanying Military District leader chuckled and chimed in. “Most Alphas in the Military District are young and vigorous. It’s normal for them to go into heat during service—we average dozens of cases a day.”
Mu Chenxing: “…So doesn’t that make me pretty dangerous? Where am I staying?”
The leader paused, then continued with a smile. “Don’t worry. For the next few days, you’ll be in our Military District’s highest-security dormitory.”
Mu Chenxing: “But you said there’s no air exchange or isolation setup?”
Leader: “It’s high-security—bulletproof kind. No one without clearance can open the door. Plus, it’s pretty far from the main dorm area, so you’ll be very safe these next few days.”
Mu Chenxing: “Far from the dorms? They didn’t stick me in a prison, did they?”
He had no idea if the Military District even had a prison, but it sure sounded like one.
The leader choked, then laughed in amused exasperation. “Prisons do have high security, but we’re not putting you in one.”
Mu Chenxing: “Oh. Well, even a prison would’ve been fine. I’m not picky.”
Fu Mingyuan: “…”
Who was it that thought this was too flashy and bad luck before they left?
The Military District leader burst out laughing instead. “If you’d come a bit earlier, you might’ve actually ended up in the prison. But that dorm just happened to free up this month, so we pulled strings to get it for you.”
Mu Chenxing was grateful. “Sorry for the trouble.”
The leader waved it off with a hearty laugh. “No trouble at all—just good timing. Besides, we haven’t seen many Omegas in the Military District for years. Everyone’s looking forward to it.”
Mu Chenxing gave a dry laugh.
Fu Mingyuan, eyes closed in rest, spoke up. “Say less.”
Mu Chenxing thought he meant him and looked over blankly.
But the Military District leader lowered his voice. “What’s wrong with me saying a couple words? I fought hard to snag this welcoming duty—can’t I even talk?”
Fu Mingyuan didn’t even open his eyes. “Even greeting me requires fighting for it? Looks like you’ve been slacking since getting back to Central Star.”
The leader rolled up his sleeves on the spot. “Come on, let me show you how much I’ve been slacking!”
Fu Mingyuan: “Training your body without your brain is useless anyway.”
The leader flushed red with anger. “If your rank wasn’t higher than mine right now, I’d have you flat on your back already!”
The two traded barbs, airing old grievances back and forth.
Mu Chenxing got it. These two are old acquaintances.
He kept quiet, perking up his ears to eavesdrop on the gossip and glean whatever juicy bits he could.
Unfortunately, they arrived after just a few exchanges.
Then Mu Chenxing learned where he was staying—the Officers’ Dormitory Area.
He had the entire top floor to himself.
Fu Mingyuan and the accompanying teachers were in different buildings, while the Military District leader shared Fu Mingyuan’s floor.
Mu Chenxing sensed something off and sidled up to Fu Mingyuan, whispering, “Principal Fu, isn’t this a bit inappropriate?”
Fu Mingyuan remained unfazed. “This place has the best security.”
The Military District leader grinned. “The Admiral arranged it personally before leaving. It’s all cleaned and prepped—no one’s used it. Stay without worry.”
Mu Chenxing: …Admiral?
He glanced at the leader.
The man winked conspiratorially, voice low. “The big boss said to take good care of you before he left~”
Mu Chenxing: “…”
“Won’t that break any rules?”
The leader chuckled slyly. “An Omega showing up in the Military District for a competition is already unconventional. Besides, this really is the safest spot in the Entire Military District, and it just opened up. Perfect fit for a few days.”
Mu Chenxing shut his mouth.
The leader even gave them a tour of the room’s security features and materials. Mu Chenxing didn’t know much about that stuff, but seeing his two Beta teachers nodding approvingly told him it was solid.
Once everyone left, he activated the protections as instructed, ensuring no one could barge in midway, then settled in comfortably to wash up and unpack.
He didn’t forget to message Zhang Yunli and the other Omegas that he’d arrived safely.
Perhaps because he knew Pei Yao had lived here for nearly half a year, Mu Chenxing felt a faint, cool aura lingering in the room as he rested. It lulled him into the deepest, most peaceful sleep.
…
The next day.
At seven-thirty, athletes from each school lined up for the opening march.
Mu Chenxing was hemmed in by a circle of tall Alpha and Beta teachers, with over two hundred burly Alphas and Betas behind him… In short, he couldn’t see any of the other schools’ competitors, and they probably couldn’t see him either.
The standard leader speeches followed. The Military District leader, Fu Mingyuan, and several school principals spoke in turn, officially kicking off the sports meet finals.
No time even for warm-ups.
Everyone retreated to the surrounding spectator seats.
The ground where they’d stood moments ago split open and sank, as the venues for the first events rose up, transforming the space into a proper arena on the spot.
Mu Chenxing marveled at it.
A nearby teacher heard his gasp and explained patiently that the arena floor beneath their feet was hollow, with panels that could shift freely.
For events, the small venue’s floors and gear moved up from underground, so no one had to run around between matches—and spectators didn’t have to chase them either.
Mu Chenxing was blown away. This is high-tech!
Compared to this, their school’s gear was ancient junk.
Sure enough, no matter the world, as long as the government’s not incompetent, military tech always leads the pack.
The first wave of events began.
Mu Chenxing’s four events were scheduled with three physical ones in the morning and Shooting in the afternoon.
While he was still geeking out over the tech, his school’s teachers started pep-talking him.
“Don’t be nervous.”
“You’re already amazing just for making it here.”
“You’re the best Omega out there.”
“We don’t care about results—just participation.”
Mu Chenxing: “…”
They almost had me psyched out.
Fortunately, the competitions finally started.
Competitors for the first five events headed down to prep.
Each school sent three per event, and with dozens of schools, it was quite the crowd.
Mu Chenxing watched them hit the field and start warming up on their own. Without hesitation, he began stretching in his seat.
His first event, Obstacle Avoidance Speed Run, was sixth in line—he needed to get ready quick.
Soon, the big screen flashed a reminder for Obstacle Avoidance Speed Run and four other events: competitors, enter the field.
Mu Chenxing stood right up.
Fu Mingyuan, his two Alpha training instructors, and the two Alpha classmates competing alongside all turned to him in unison.
The two Alpha teachers were visibly tense.
“Your explosive power’s still a bit weak. If you lose, you lose—keep your cool.”
“Speed run’s your weak spot. Don’t get too stressed.”
The two Alpha classmates:
“You’ve trained for less time. Losing’s normal.”
“You’re already awesome for getting here. No pressure.”
Even Fu Mingyuan looked at him. “Just do your best.”
Mu Chenxing: “…”
Obstacle Avoidance Speed Run was the only event where he’d nabbed third in the school finals.
Guess no one has faith in me.
He didn’t know the other schools’ levels and didn’t argue, just nodded obediently. “Got it.”
They headed down,
meeting up with competitors and teachers from the other four events.
Their school’s contingent spotted them descending and shouted encouragements.
A few loudmouths bellowed—
“Go, little Omega! Show ’em what you’ve got!”
“Little Omega, crush ’em!”
“Little Omega, don’t hold back!”
Suddenly, every eye in the vicinity snapped over, locking onto the shortest figure in the group: Mu Chenxing.
Mu Chenxing: “…”
“That’s an Omega!!”
“No way—there’s really an Omega competing!”
“Holy crap, did First Military Academy lose their minds?”
“Pushing such a cute Omega into the games? All their Alphas dead?”
“Must be for show. Omega equality hype’s gotten out of hand these years.”
“Tch, probably some high-official’s kid throwing a tantrum.”
The Alpha competing alongside him in Obstacle Avoidance Speed Run hesitated, then murmured, “Don’t stress. Your skills are solid—just race well.”
The other comforted him too. “No worries. Teachers won’t blame you if you lose.”
Mu Chenxing blinked, replying as they walked. “I figured you’d want me to lose. You guys barely talked to me during training.”
The two Alphas exchanged glances. One said awkwardly, “Instructors banned us from bothering you. Even one word meant three thousand meters or a hundred push-ups.”
Mu Chenxing: “…”
I’d underestimated how much the school was shielding me.
The other whispered, “Besides, no matter how much we dislike it, out here we’re repping the school. Can’t embarrass it.”
Mu Chenxing raised a brow.
I’d thought Alphas were all hotheaded brutes. These two seem decent.
…Maybe because they’re second-years, past basic indoctrination?
Before he could figure it out, they’d descended from the stands amid the whispers. The accompanying teachers peeled off to the waiting area, leaving the five-event competitors to enter the prep zone.
Two gate-like scanners stood at the prep zone entrance, checking heart rate, temperature, blood pressure, and such to ensure everyone was in fair condition.
The five events’ competitors passed through one by one.
When their school’s turn came, several teachers approached, eyes sweeping to Mu Chenxing.
He looked back puzzled.
One teacher said warmly, “Classmate, the check might feel hot with infrared—don’t be scared.”
Another: “Speak up if anything feels off.”
One even fretted, “Need to sit a bit first?”
Mu Chenxing: “…No need.”
Under their watchful eyes, he calmly passed through the gate with his schoolmates.
The broadcast crackled right on cue—
“Obstacle Avoidance Speed Run, Hurdle Speed Run… competitors to starting positions.”
“Obstacle Avoidance Speed Run features 174 competitors this round: 147 Alphas, 26 Betas, 1 Omega…”
Omega?!
Competing?!
The arena erupted.
The venue, packed with thousands, roared like the tide.
Mu Chenxing stood with hands clasped behind his back, dwarfed like a kid among the towering Alphas. From the distant seats, no one could even spot him—so he stayed utterly chill.
But his schoolmates suddenly traded glances, then shuffled—you step forward, I step back—huddling tight to shield him completely.
Mu Chenxing’s composure cracked as he flailed his arms dramatically. “…Classmates, leave me some air!”
