What illegitimate son? His mother had said she and their father were true loves, together before their father married. His father and the mothers of Yu Zhensheng and Yu Qingxian had been a political marriage, forced upon him. After Mrs. Yu bore one son and one daughter, their father had been ready to divorce.
If Mrs. Yu hadn’t gotten pregnant with Yu Qingxian, his mother wouldn’t have been so upset she miscarried, unable to give birth to his older brother. If his brother were still around, their father would have married his mother, and he’d be a proper young master of the Yu Corporation, just like Yu Qingxian!
In other words, without Yu Qingxian, Xingyao would be his, and so would Chu Yi!
Yu Qingxian rubbed his temples. “What I think doesn’t matter. Whether you are or aren’t has nothing to do with me.”
He didn’t understand why he’d lost control. Was it really just the headache?
“Chu Yi went to Liang Province on a mission. He’ll be back in a few days… I have things to do. I’m leaving.”
His dismissive tone, in Liu Shengqing’s eyes, was utter contempt, an eagerness to distance himself.
“Don’t go—we haven’t settled this!” Liu Shengqing fumed and stepped forward to pester him further.
Yu Qingxian was already feeling awful by then and waved him off without thinking. “We have nothing to talk about.”
He turned to leave once more, unaware that behind him, Liu Shengqing clutched his brushed-aside face, eyes bloodshot with rage—
“Yu Qingxian, you sanctimonious bastard—why don’t you just drop dead?!”
…
Chu Yi left the swamp and was helicoptered back to Liang Province Base three days later.
As soon as he stepped off the helicopter, he saw Wu He there to greet him. He paused. “Director Wu, why are you here?”
Wu He gave a wry smile. “You stirred up such a huge commotion in Liang Province—how could I not come?”
All cases involving non-human, non-beast entities fell under the Special Affairs Office’s jurisdiction. And from the reports of the intelligence gatherers, that Man-Eating Flower King had nearly become a spirit—definitely under his purview.
“Chu Yi, oh Chu Yi, how do you manage to attract so much trouble? I barely sent the stuff from Dragon Soaring Mountain back when I rushed straight here to Liang Province without even catching my breath! Let’s get one thing straight—you can’t run off this time. You have to stay and brief me on the full situation first…”
Because that swamp lay on Liang Province’s border, with Myanmar to the south. The higher-ups worried about foreign infiltration or smugglers stirring chaos to distract, so they ordered a thorough investigation.
Wu He had grown familiar with Chu Yi by now; he no longer called him “Master,” and his attitude had relaxed considerably.
Chu Yi frowned. “What do you mean I attract trouble? If I’d been a step later in discovering them, Dragon Soaring Mountain’s incident would’ve repeated itself.”
Wu He was stunned, eyes widening. “No way? How long has that thing been around? Did it really become a spirit or what?”
On his way there, he’d had people check some ancient texts. They said certain Demon Plants that absorbed heaven-and-earth essence could mature and earth-burrow to relocate. If that was the case, Chu Yi’s warning about Dragon Soaring Mountain happening again wasn’t a joke!
“Probably twenty or thirty years. It looked like it was refined with some special secret method, plus blood-and-flesh sacrifices, so it grew extraordinarily fast.”
Wu He pondered. “Could it be that Black-Clothed Man from before?”
That guy had schemed against Wei Xiaoxiao and set up the Man-Eating Flower trap even earlier—the timeline fit perfectly.
“Not him.” Chu Yi shook his head. “He doesn’t have that kind of capability.”
He’d clashed with the Black-Clothed Man; his strength didn’t seem sufficient to set up a Man-Eating Flower trap.
“Then maybe he has other accomplices?” Wu He actually wanted to ask if the Evil God had other followers but hesitated and rephrased.
Chu Yi: “I don’t know.”
“How can you not know? Didn’t you see it firsthand and fight those Man-Eating Flowers?” Wu He grumbled.
Chu Yi shot him a glance. “If Director Wu thinks the naked eye can reveal everything, go find the clues yourself. As for the battle, Captain Fu and his team were all involved—you can ask them.”
At those words, Wu He had an ominous premonition. “Wh-what do you mean by that?”
Chu Yi: “It means I’m not playing along. I’m heading back to the Capital City right now.”
He’d said what needed saying; staying longer was impossible—he couldn’t stand even another minute!
Chu Yi walked off without looking back. Ouyang Yuyuan hurried after him from the helicopter and explained, “Director Wu, don’t blame Yi Ge for being cold. Cousin Xian got into trouble—we’re all rushing back to the capital.”
He didn’t know how Yi Ge had found out, but as soon as they could contact the outside, Yi Ge made a call right away.
It was answered by his Big Cousin, who said Cousin Xian and Liu Shengqing had argued. In a fit of anger, Liu Shengqing shoved Cousin Xian into a parking lot pillar—he’d apparently cracked his head open and been unconscious for three days.
“What? I had no idea…” Wu He was surprised. He’d seen how close Chu Yi and Yu Qingxian were; back when Kang Family’s patriarch turned into a zombie, those two had been all sticky-sweet.
Later, when he returned, he’d overheard Master Chen and Master Zhang “exchanging academic insights” privately about their fated entanglement. He’d been all business then and hadn’t noticed!
Ouyang Yuyuan waved it off. “Director Wu came from Dragon Soaring Mountain—you can’t be blamed. Oh, right, Master Zhang’s disciple Zhang Jue is here too. He’ll know everything clearest if you want to ask.”
Zhang Jue, just about to disembark from the helicopter: “…QAQ”
He’d finally escaped that hellhole—he really didn’t want to go back!
