Chapter 42: Can’t Find It Anymore
Tonight’s dinner was spaghetti and pan-fried fish fillet, along with a vegetable salad with only a little olive oil. Si Jisheng had made two portions of everything. Afraid that Deng Xi wouldn’t be used to it, he had also made a portion of marinated raw oyster sashimi.
They were placed on the suspended table by the pool.
Deng Xi habitually waited for the little mute to carry him to the transparent chair by the suspended table to eat.
But Si Jisheng just pushed the flying chair to the side of the suspended table and placed the dinner on the small table of the flying chair.
Deng Xi was a little unhappy.
But he was the one who had refused.
He lowered his eyelids and quietly picked up the human fork. He perked up again and rolled up a small mouthful of the spaghetti that the little mute had mentioned, and tentatively tasted it.
The spaghetti was steaming hot, drizzled with a tomato meat sauce. The noodles were al dente, and the sauce was sweet and sour. It was delicious.
The pan-fried fish fillet had also been specially cut into many small pieces, giving Deng Xi no chance to use a knife.
The vegetable salad was cool and refreshing, and the raw oysters sprinkled with sea salt were a flavor that Deng Xi had never experienced before.
But a merman’s appetite was very small. Deng Xi only ate a little of everything, and the rest was finished by Si Jisheng.
After this silent dinner was over, Si Jisheng got up to clear the dishes. Deng Xi looked at the little mute’s departing back, then controlled the flying chair himself and came to the surface of the pool. He clumsily propped up his body with his arms and, bit by bit, leaned towards the water. Finally, he closed his eyes and flipped out of the flying chair into the pool.
The surface of the water splashed everywhere.
Deng Xi also became soaking wet, like a drowned fish. He then struggled to flick his tail fin and, stretching his arms high, pushed the suspended flying chair on the surface of the water to the shore.
He couldn’t wait for the little mute to carry him back under the water anymore.
Deng Xi had to learn how to take care of himself when the little mute was not around.
When Si Jisheng returned to the pool, he saw that the flying chair was already empty. The soaking wet little merman was leaning against the shore, his soaked golden hair was stuck to the side of his face in a mess, but his face was still beaming with a big smile, as if very proud. “Even without Little Mute carrying me, I can still get back into the water by myself.”
Super amazing!
Si Jisheng rolled up his sleeves and sighed slightly. He half-knelt by the side of the pool. “Then can you take off your clothes?”
Deng Xi’s proud expression paused, and he looked down at the human clothes that he had completely soaked with some guilt.
The soaked Jiaoren silk was thin and transparent, sticking to the little merman’s body. The feeling of being wrapped and bound by the clothes was intensified. Deng Xi uncomfortably tugged at the loose collar and raised his hand to try and untie the straps of the little dress himself.
But under the silver-tail’s calm gaze, he fumbled for a long time without making any progress, and instead, it became more and more of a mess.
It had completely become a dead knot.
“Don’t move.”
Si Jisheng leaned over, and with his fingertips, he hooked the tie of the Jiaoren silk dress. His silver eyes narrowed slightly, and he untied it meticulously. After the collar was completely open, he reached into the water. The mechanical gloves pulled at the hem of the Jiaoren silk dress, which was dancing gracefully under the water.
“Hands.”
Deng Xi obediently raised his hands.
The next second, the Jiaoren silk dress that was sticking to his body was lifted up, passed over his head, and completely removed.
The feeling of being bound was also taken away in an instant.
Si Jisheng lifted the dripping Jiaoren silk dress, preparing to get up and leave, but Deng Xi tugged at the corner of his clothes. He blinked his blue eyes. “Is Little Mute going to sleep in the water tonight?”
Si Jisheng was silent for a moment. “There’s only one shell.”
Deng Xi lowered his eyes dejectedly.
There was only one shell. If the little mute wanted to sleep with him in the water, then they could only squeeze into one shell. That way, besides their bodies being pressed together, their tails would also very likely touch.
Deng Xi lowered his head in frustration. “Alright then.”
Si Jisheng’s departing steps paused. He opened the early childhood education video that Dr. Li had sent him on Deng Xi’s comm. “If you’re bored, just contact me with your comm and I’ll come over.”
Deng Xi nodded.
Si Jisheng left the pool, preparing to go to the study to deal with the official business that the adjutant had sent over.
After the silver-tail left, Deng Xi lay on the shore alone, quietly watching the video displayed on the blue screen, listening to the teacher’s lecture. Before he knew it, he had drowsily fallen asleep again.
When he woke up again, it was already dark outside.
The lights above the pool were not on. Only the clear moonlight shone on the surface of the water, reflecting a fragmented light.
After the comm had finished playing the video, it had long since gone dark and dimmed.
Deng Xi woke up in the darkness, still a little dazed. He lay there quietly for a while before swimming to the lonely large shell in the corner.
It was a large, pearly white shell, just like the one he had given to the little mute in the ocean. The red coral that was stuck on it with clay, was it also stuck on by the little mute’s own hands, just like him?
Deng Xi poked it curiously with his hand.
After poking it, he habitually turned back, but when he looked up, all he could see was the empty surface of the pool and the darkness behind him. Under the moonlight, only his lonely back was reflected on the surface of the water.
There was no rose-red large shell that he and the little mute had found together in his memory, no familiar seaweed bed in the lair, and no winding bright silver fish tail on the seaweed bed.
There was nothing.
Deng Xi lifted the pearly white large shell, quietly hugged his big tail, and curled up inside. But he had already slept for a long time, and no matter how he closed his eyes, he was not sleepy.
Deng Xi opened his eyes again and stayed quietly in the darkness for a while before tentatively opening his comm. The blue screen appeared in the darkness, illuminating the little merman in the shell.
“Little Mu—”te.
Deng Xi only said the first two words before he paused. After the communication was connected, what was he going to say after he saw the little mute?
Did he want to sleep with the little mute?
But he couldn’t say that.
Deng Xi turned off the comm again, quietly raised his head, and, a little bored, blew one small bubble after another, looking through the surface of the water at the night sky outside the transparent dome of the pool.
The night sky in the human world did not have a very bright moon, nor was it full of stars. Thick gray clouds covered the half-crescent moon, and the entire night sky was empty.
Deng Xi suddenly sat up. He swam out of the large shell and sank to the bottom of the sea.
Deng Xi had not yet explored the deep-sea abyss under the pool. He had been in this ocean for several days, but he had not yet fully explored this sea area.
Deng Xi had become a merman who was not diligent about the ocean.
Anyway, he couldn’t sleep tonight, so why not go on an adventure!
Deng Xi flicked his tail fin and dived into the deep-sea abyss under the pool.
There were only a few small fish resting in this deep-sea abyss. Deng Xi swam a circle at the bottom. Afraid of danger in the depths, he did not dive deep, nor did he disturb the sleeping sea creatures.
Instead, he swam towards the passage in the abyss that led to the outside ocean. He passed through a patch of reef and coral, and came to the vast, boundless ocean. The blue fish tail swayed and shuttled under the surface of the sea.
Deng Xi swam for a long, long time, and broke through the water under the moonlight.
He leaned against a protruding reef, slapped the surface of the sea with his fan-shaped tail fin, blew the cold, salty sea breeze of the night, and, with wide eyes, counted the stars in the night sky, not feeling bored at all.
In the past, in the ocean, if Deng Xi couldn’t sleep at night, he would also swim to the surface in the middle of the night, lie by the side of a reef, and count the stars to fall asleep.
But there were simply too few stars in this night sky.
Deng Xi had finished counting them all after a short while. He couldn’t help but glance at the comm on his wrist, then forced himself to look at the starry sky and counted the stars again.
“One, two, three…”
He wanted the little mute to count with him.
·
“Ding—”
The comm rang, and the communication was connected.
Si Jisheng closed his tired eyes, put down the document in his hand, and looked at the blue screen displayed on the comm. The video communication showed the entrance of the manor in District A.
The image reversed, revealing the adjutant’s dark face under the cover of the night. “Marshal, please open the access rights. I’ve brought the things you wanted.”
After speaking, the adjutant thought of the large, rose-red shell in his flying ship, and couldn’t help but twitch the corner of his eyebrow.
Their Marshal had fallen in love, and he was like a different person. Last night, it was that Jiaoren silk little dress, this morning, it was that Barbie-pink, glittery, translucent mobility chair, and tonight, it was this girly, rose-red shell bed.
The thought of their Marshal actually sleeping in something like this, the contrast was too great, and the adjutant couldn’t help but feel a chill.
He coughed twice. After seeing that the access rights to the gate were open, he dragged the shell bed out of the flying ship and handed it to the mechanical butler.
After completing his mission, the adjutant couldn’t wait to leave District A, as if he were afraid that if he ran a step slower, he would be assassinated by the Marshal who had found out the truth.
The adjutant thought to himself, falling in love is really scary.
The mechanical butler carried the shell bed all the way into the villa floor of the manor and delivered it to the master bedroom on the third floor.
After a knock on the door, the sound of water in the bathroom quickly stopped. Si Jisheng, bare-chested and only wearing a pair of combat pants, passed by the mechanical gloves that had been taken off on the suspended table, opened the door, and looked at the rose-red shell bed that he had spent a long time looking for to find a similar style.
Si Jisheng pressed the comm on his knuckle and, for the nth time, looked at the communication records.
He reconfirmed that it was not a problem with the comm, but that there was really no notification of any incoming communication.
He took a deep breath before he bent down and lifted the shell bed, which was taller than a person, from the ground, and easily carried it down to the glass room of the pool on the first floor.
Because it was late at night, the pool was dark. Si Jisheng did not turn on the lights, afraid that Deng Xi was already asleep. He moved lightly and came to the shore, dragged the shell bed, and went down into the pool, walking to the corner where he remembered the pearly white shell was placed.
He put down the rose-red shell, and his silver eyes slightly raised. His movements froze in an instant.
The pearly white shell was wide open, and the blue-tail who should have been sleeping peacefully in the shell was nowhere to be seen. Si Jisheng opened the comm’s operating system, and the next second, the entire pool was completely lit up.
Under the cold, incandescent lights, the pool was empty, with no sign of a blue-tail.
His breathing instantly became chaotic.
The bright silver fish tail tore through the combat pants and instantly appeared in the pool. The silver Jiaoren sank to the bottom of the sea and searched the abyss where the blue-tail might be.
Not long after, Si Jisheng resurfaced. He remembered something and opened his comm to make a communication.
That’s right, this was not the ocean.
It was the human world.
This was not the past. He could completely contact Deng Xi through his comm.
The first time, the communication was hung up.
On the other side, Deng Xi was startled by the suddenly lit-up comm. He didn’t know what he had touched, and the blue screen went dark again.
The second time, the communication was still hung up.
Deng Xi had no experience of being called. On the bare blue screen, there was only a system-default dark avatar and two buttons, one red and one green.
He pressed the red one.
The blue screen returned to silence.
Deng Xi tilted his head and lay on the reef.
Is this thing broken?
The third time, the fourth time…
The communications came faster and faster, and a hint of panic could even be seen from the frequency.
The sixteenth time.
Deng Xi tentatively pressed the green button.
“Ding—”
The low-pressure silver eyes appeared on the blue screen. His voice was deep, with a hint of suppressed restraint.
“Where are you?”
