“I’m so anxious—I thought you died in the Xinnan Immortal Sect.” Hua Mei finally connected the voice transmission with Gu Changhuai and let out a sigh of relief. “Seven whole days. What were you doing? You didn’t even make a sound to say you weren’t dead. Suddenly cutting off the transmission is really scary, you know.”
Gu Changhuai had already fled the Xinnan Immortal Sect by now. He was using all his strength to hurry toward the Demon Realm, but his legs were still weak—or rather, his entire body was unusually sensitive, sore and aching, utterly exhausted as he replied via transmission, “It’s no different from being dead. Did Rong Ye discover my identity?”
Hua Mei said, “So you went silent because Qing Lian Immortal Lord picked up the Qiankun Sword and fought you for seven days and nights?”
Gu Changhuai: “…”
They had indeed gone at it for seven days and nights, but not with the Qiankun Sword. There was no need to go into detail with Hua Mei about that sort of thing. He vaguely planned to muddle through and said, “How could I beat him? I’m in the middle of escaping for my life here. I took time out of my busy schedule just to let you know I’m safe.”
If he didn’t hurry up and escape, he suspected he’d die on that bed—far more miserably than actually dying.
Hua Mei said, “Fine.” Hua Mei seemed to accept the explanation, then added, “Actually, thinking about it carefully, Qing Lian Immortal Lord shouldn’t have taken this long to discover you. You got some extra time out of it.”
“…”
Gu Changhuai fell silent.
Far more than that.
Rong Ye had known from the start that he was a demon. Several traps had been ones he’d jumped into himself, and Rong Ye had even played dirty, deliberately letting him suffer the losses.
When he finished watching it all in their divine senses, Gu Changhuai was furious from the bottom of his heart—seething with rage, burning with humiliation and anger… Then he tried to slap him, only to have his waist grabbed and be flipped over forcefully.
Just thinking about it made his lower abdomen start aching and swelling again.
Having suffered in silence, Gu Changhuai could only force a laugh in front of his friend. “Yeah, I got some extra time. I’ll reach Blood Night City soon. The message has already been sent back to the Demon Domain. In a couple of days, once I’m at the Demon Palace, we’ll make our move. Have you handled things on your end?”
Hua Mei snorted a laugh. “Who do you think you’re underestimating? Of course everything’s ready. We’re just waiting for you to storm the Demon Palace.”
“Got it.” Gu Changhuai exchanged a few more words with Hua Mei, cut off the transmission, and sent one to Xue Lao Er. “I’m almost at Blood Night City. Any movements from the Demon Palace?”
Xue Lao Er replied, “You disappear for so long, and when you finally contact me, you don’t even ask if I’m okay?”
Gu Changhuai cursed, “What time is it? What are you being dramatic for?!”
After getting scolded, Xue Lao Er behaved and muttered, “I see your temper’s gotten worse. The Demon Venerable has already received word of your return and sent the Right Protector ahead to Blood Night City to meet you.”
Gu Changhuai frowned. “Who? The Right Protector? Isn’t he always busy? He doesn’t even show up for the Demon Palace banquets all year round.”
“Who knows why he suddenly came back,” Xue Lao Er said. “Be careful.”
“…”
Gu Changhuai pondered. “I have a bad feeling about this.” The Right Protector rarely appeared, and whenever he did, it always stirred up trouble.
Xue Lao Er said, “Who knows what the Demon Venerable is planning or what orders he’s given. Also, I checked the Blood Pool—there really is a Boundary Locking Array there. It doesn’t look systematic at all. You’ll have to force it open with the Heaven-Breaking Bow.”
Gu Changhuai said, “Good, I got it. You go hide somewhere first. I’ll go meet this Right Protector.”
“Mm.” Xue Lao Er agreed.
After the two cut off the transmission, Gu Changhuai caught sight of Blood Night City’s silhouette. Fiery red maple trees were scattered along every road in the city, looking from afar like rivers of blood.
He blinked, suddenly thinking of Rong Ye. His eyes softened for an instant, but then he recalled the other’s ruthless demeanor and gritted his teeth, his lips pressing into a flat line.
He did not notice.
A white shadow flashed by behind him, neither too close nor too far, utterly silent, its aura completely concealed. With strength so overwhelming, even the prior fusion of their divine senses and familiarity wouldn’t allow detection.
