In all his twenty-some years, the only bitterness Jiang Sheng had ever tasted was iced Americanos.
Doted on by his parents, cared for by his older brother, he married his childhood sweetheart right out of college.
He sighed, “Husband, my life has been so smooth.”
But then disaster struck. His husband died in a car accident, and overnight Jiang Sheng became a young widower, crying day and night—until one day, dazed in the shower, he slipped into the tub, went glub-glub-glub, and bubbled his way off to enjoy the good life with his husband.
When he opened his eyes again, Jiang Sheng had transmigrated into Great Gan, becoming a pitiful little pawn sent off by his family.
To marry that North-Guarding Prince rumored to be violent and cruel.
Jiang Sheng wailed, threw tantrums, and threatened to hang himself.
How could he marry someone else? He had a husband!!
All the fuss was useless. Bound hand and foot in red silk, he was packaged up and delivered to the manor.
Trembling, he hid in a corner, tears streaming down his face—until he heard the door open, followed by a man’s cold, disgusted voice. “Throw it out and deal with it.”
Several servants moved to seize Jiang Sheng. In his panic, Jiang Sheng looked up and saw the North-Guarding Prince’s face—and froze.
Dazed, he blurted, “Husband?”
…
After finding his husband again, Jiang Sheng returned to living high on the hog. Though he missed his family a little, he had a husband waiting on him hand and foot here—he lived even more comfortably than before.
His only complaint was that people here loved spreading rumors.
Jiang Sheng had overheard snippets, all of them slandering his husband. Cruel and violent, bloodthirsty, they said.
What nonsense!
He knew his own husband!
The gentlest, most considerate man alive! Courteous and polite to everyone!
Until one night, Jiang Sheng woke from a nightmare, felt around, and found his husband gone from the bed. Rubbing his eyes, he stumbled out half-asleep to look for him.
Somehow he wandered to the secret chamber at the back. Just as he reached the door, he heard a shrill, agonized scream.
Jiang Sheng jolted in fright.
Standing at the doorway, he saw his husband wearing a cold, stern expression he had never seen before, wiping the blood off his hands with a cloth, casually ordering someone to drag the corpse out to feed the dogs.
Jiang Sheng: Kitty?

Mini Theater 1:
The North-Guarding Prince was bloodthirsty and mercurial. Everyone said the pitiful thing the Jiang Family sent over wouldn’t survive three days.
Yet less than half a month later, the North-Guarding Prince requested an Imperial Edict for a grand wedding with Jiang Sheng.
Jade and treasures piled up all over the courtyard. Servants waited outside the curtain with trays, holding their breath as they listened to the North-Guarding Prince coax someone in a soft voice.
“Baby, I was wrong. Next time I’ll listen to you, I promise. You say stop, we stop. There, let me rub your waist again.”
“I had them make ice cream. Try some.”

Mini Theater 2:
After the North-Guarding Prince became Emperor, Jiang Sheng became Empress.
All the officials knew the Emperor was cold and brutal, killing at the slightest displeasure—so whenever trouble arose, they went to cry to the Empress first.
But the gates of Qiankun Palace were shut tight. The Empress, who had come out to plead for his ministers, was being pressed down onto the Dragon Throne, robes hiked up, eyes red, sniffling and sobbing.
Waaah… he didn’t want to be Empress anymore! The sacrifice was too great!
