Chapter 44p1: Lecture
The little merman, who had just woken up, groggily pushed open the shell. He was pricked by the morning light and closed his eyes, rubbing the tears that had overflowed from the corners of his eyes. When he looked forward, he couldn’t help but rub his eyes again.
How could the shell he and the little mute had found together be here?
Deng Xi stared blankly at the large, rose-red shell placed next to the pearly white one. After a long while, he looked around in a daze, confirming that he was still in the human world and had not suddenly returned to the ocean.
He flicked his tail fin and swam out, opening the tightly closed, rose-red shell. A bright silver fish tail slowly came into view. The silver-tail was lying flat on the seaweed bed in the shell. Even in his deep sleep, his face was still cold.
Deng Xi felt as if he had opened a treasure chest. He curved his eyelids happily. In the future, he could sleep in the water with the little mute.
The silver-tail seemed to be sleeping particularly soundly today.
Even when Deng Xi opened the shell and let the light shine in, it didn’t wake him up.
The calmed mental sea had allowed Si Jisheng to fall into a rare, deep sleep. It wasn’t until his eyelids were gently nudged by a fingertip that he slowly opened his eyes and looked over with a clear gaze.
Deng Xi was lying on the side of the shell, propping his chin on his hands, a pink mark squeezed out on his cheek. His curly golden hair was floating up and down in the seawater. The light shone through the water and onto his back, seeming to cast a soft, faint glow on him. His ocean-blue eyes curved slightly. “Good morning, Little Mute.”
He withdrew the translucent pink fingertip that had been touching the silver-tail’s eyelid and blinked obediently, trying to prove that he wasn’t the one who had been causing trouble and waking the sleeping silver-tail.
Si Jisheng propped himself up, his voice low and hoarse from just waking up. “Morning.”
In the itinerary that the adjutant had sent him today, there was a lecture for the Imperial Military Academy’s league. As the Marshal of the military, he would be responsible for giving a few minutes’ speech at this lecture.
Besides the military academy’s contestants and official personnel, there were also photographers from various official media outlets at the lecture.
People were coming and going.
Si Jisheng was not very at ease. He refused Deng Xi’s request to ride in the laser mobility chair and chose a simple, silver-white one. The little merman was not very happy and climbed into the flying chair from the pool by himself.
He flicked his tail and almost fell forward.
It was Si Jisheng who lifted Deng Xi up and placed him in steadily.
Deng Xi looked at the colorful flying chair with longing eyes and asked in a muffled voice, “Why can’t I ride it?”
Si Jisheng put a new Jiaoren silk dress on Deng Xi, bent down to tie the straps, and replied patiently, “There will be a lot of people today.”
If it were in the military headquarters, even if someone saw Deng Xi’s tail, with him around, no one would dare to say anything.
But in the military academy, that flying chair was simply too eye-catching. Once the video recorded by the media was uploaded to the official website, the golden-haired, blue-tailed little merman would be noticed by many people.
Si Jisheng gathered Deng Xi’s golden hair with his palm and loosely tied it behind his back. The honey and milk he had ordered before had arrived. He turned and poured the warmed honey milk into the cup prepared for Deng Xi and placed it on the flying chair.
Breakfast was salmon sashimi.
While Deng Xi was eating breakfast, Si Jisheng turned and put on his mechanical gloves. His silver eyes were lowered as he skillfully assembled a series of guns.
In case there was a sudden rampage at the lecture.
After everything was assembled, he led Deng Xi onto the flying ship. The flying ship first drove automatically to the military headquarters, then transferred to the official flying ship used by the military before going to the Imperial Military Academy.
Deng Xi quietly followed behind the little mute, not disturbing the busy-looking silver-tail.
“Hello?”
Deng Xi turned to look in the direction of the voice. It was a human male. He remembered this person. When he had been brought home by the little mute, this person had been by his side.
Deng Xi greeted him very politely, “Hello.”
The adjutant half-squatted down and said with a hearty laugh, “Just call me William. I will be with you the whole time today and protect your safety.”
Deng Xi subconsciously looked at the little mute. The little mute was surrounded by many people, sitting in front of a large light screen, his silver eyes indifferently looking at something.
The mobility chair that Deng Xi was sitting in was in the lounge area of the flying ship, an area that Si Jisheng could see with a turn of his head.
The adjutant patted his chest. “Don’t worry, the Marshal personally entrusted you to me.”
Deng Xi gripped the unfinished honey milk, a little uneasy. “Where is he going?”
The adjutant explained, “The Marshal has a speech later.”
Deng Xi didn’t quite understand. “Speech?”
What was that?
The adjutant knew that the new species had lived on a primitive planet before, but he didn’t know how to explain this, which in his eyes was a very basic event. No matter how he explained something he had never witnessed, it was futile.
He once again lamented how troublesome it must be for the Marshal to be in a relationship on a daily basis. He scratched his head. “How about this, I’ll go and ask the Marshal if he can take you to see it.”
Deng Xi pursed his lips. “Will he be there too?”
The adjutant said as if it were a matter of course, “Without the Marshal, there’s no need to hold this lecture. Of course the Marshal will be there.”
Only then did Deng Xi nod his head.
The adjutant quickly went to ask for permission and came back. “The Marshal has agreed.”
Deng Xi’s eyelids curved. “Thank you.”
The merman’s heaven-defying beauty and obedient, soft smile.
The adjutant felt a critical hit. He couldn’t help but turn his face away and cough twice, then said awkwardly, “Um, can I get your autograph?”
“My wife saw your picture on the star network before, and she also knows that you’re a new species that has never been seen in the galaxy. She really likes you.”
The matter of the Imperial Marshal using a hundred-billion auction to annihilate the notorious skull star pirate gang had been a hot topic on the star network. Although the live stream recording of the auction that Deng Xi had left behind had been cleared by the military on the star network, it had still been circulated, and quite a few people had seen it.
In addition, the Empire had not deliberately blocked the news of the new species. The main personnel of the military and the research institute basically all knew Deng Xi’s identity.
Deng Xi, who had shown his face once in the military yesterday, already had a small number of fans.
Deng Xi hadn’t even reacted to what an autograph was when he heard the adjutant’s last sentence. He lowered his eyelids in embarrassment, but couldn’t help but be curious. “But we haven’t met. Why does she like me?”
The adjutant leaned against the armrest of the lounge chair, opened his comm, and sent a message.
Not long after, he clicked on the voice message that the other party had sent, and a very gentle female voice sounded from the comm.
“Is this Deng Xi? Hello, I’ve always wanted to meet you.”
“Are you okay? I’ve been very worried that that auction would leave you with a psychological shadow. I hope you’re okay, and don’t mind the discussions about your identity on the star network.”
“Also, you’re very good-looking. Even if we haven’t met, many humans will like you.”
Just give the new world a little more patience.
Deng Xi was stunned for a moment, a little at a loss, but he couldn’t help but curl the corners of his lips, revealing a dimple. His blue eyes also curved along with them. “Can I talk to her?”
The adjutant handed his comm over.
Deng Xi pursed his lips, in a difficult position. “I don’t know how to use it.”
The adjutant “hissed.” He pressed the record button. “She can hear you this way. Just speak directly.”
Deng Xi tentatively said, “I’m sorry, I still don’t know what an autograph is.”
Even if he did, the illiterate little merman still wouldn’t know how to write his own name.
Deng Xi continued, “But thank you for your affection. I’m fine.”
He had slowly changed his opinion of humans.
The ocean was very good.
The human world, with the little mute, was also very good.
·
The military’s flying ship stopped behind the already cleared hall. Si Jisheng was draped in the Empire’s unique black and gold military greatcoat. The medals awarded over the years hung heavily on his shoulders. When he bent down, the golden chain wrapped around his chest even fell on Deng Xi’s face, heavy and cold.
The same black mechanical gloves tucked Deng Xi’s hanging golden hair behind him. His voice was calm as he asked, “What do you want to eat for lunch?”
Deng Xi thought for a moment. “I want to eat the humans’ hot rice.”
Si Jisheng acknowledged with a sound. “Alright, wait for me to come back.”
He quickly straightened up, turned, and got off the flying ship. The leadership of the Imperial Military Academy, who were waiting below, surrounded him. Not long after, Deng Xi could no longer see his departing back.
The flying ship was suddenly empty.
The adjutant looked at the time. “Shall we go?”
Deng Xi controlled the flying chair and followed behind the adjutant.
The publicity for this lecture had only been for less than a day, but the outside of the Imperial Military Academy’s hall was already packed with people. The military academy students in their uniforms were mixed with the swarming official media. People were packed together, and it even took the military to barely maintain order.
The adjutant, who was leading the way, couldn’t help but look back and say, “You have to be careful. There are a lot of people. Don’t—” get lost.
His whole body froze. He looked at the empty space behind him. The adjutant swallowed with difficulty and looked around. All he could see were figures. He couldn’t see a single, ordinary mobility chair.
It was over.
He was dead.
