Chapter 97: Clarification
The military’s research report was extremely authoritative. It almost indirectly verified the authenticity of the video of unknown origin to the public. The public on the star network immediately turned their sharp criticism toward the Council of Elders, to the Elder.
Including the royal family.
Their demand was very simple—the truth of that year.
The latter half of the trial conference video.
The Empire’s official account had been completely bombarded by the public. It was a rare petition of ten thousand people in the hundred-year history of the Empire.
On the top floor of the military and political building, the sunlight that shone in through the French windows illuminated the entire room. The man in the black and gold military greatcoat was sitting in an armchair. The light was jumping on the smooth, golden epaulets. He was quietly looking into the void, his eyes calm, as if he were waiting for something.
Soon, a communication sounded.
After it was connected, a voice that was faintly suppressing its anger immediately came from his ear. “What will it take for you to stop?”
Si Jisheng was unhurried. “Very simple. Let the guilty pay the price.”
In the matter of three years ago, only a few insignificant people in the Council of Elders had been sentenced. The real culprit was hidden behind the scenes, behind these scapegoats.
He had been unsure all these years whether the Elder had been involved.
But everything that the experiment had confessed had made Si Jisheng guess who had planned everything that had been linked together three years ago.
The Duke of the Gran clan roared on the other end of the communication, “Do you know what a scandal this is for the Empire?!”
Si Jisheng’s tone was instantly cold. “Letting the dead be wronged is the Empire’s scandal.”
The communication fell into a dead silence.
The Duke of the Gran clan gritted his teeth. The royal family had been tricked by the military, letting that alien convention be completely effective. They now had no leverage on the Marshal and had no capital to negotiate at all.
Si Jisheng gave his final ultimatum. “In half an hour, the military will issue an arrest warrant for the Elder on the charge of organizing human experiments. It’s only a matter of time before the video of the trial conference gets into my hands.”
When the Elder was on the military’s territory, there were plenty of ways to make the Council of Elders beg to give them the video.
The Duke of the Gran clan’s face instantly became extremely ugly.
If it were to be announced by the royal family’s council, the public’s criticism would only be directed at the Council of Elders. But if it were to be announced by the military, the royal family would also be in the line of fire.
Why had they deliberately hidden it? Why had they sheltered the Council of Elders? The Duke of the Gran clan sighed heavily and sat down on the sofa. If the balance of the three parties of the Empire was broken, with just the royal family alone, they had no ability to compete with the powerful military.
A sound suddenly came from the other end of the communication.
The Duke of the Gran clan came back to his senses and suddenly heard a youth’s voice from the Marshal’s side. It was clear and dependent, and a little flustered. “I didn’t see you when I woke up.”
The comm was put down, and the Marshal’s voice became distant, but it was enough for the Duke of the Gran clan to hear. The other party’s cold tone instantly melted, and he asked in a low voice, “What’s wrong?”
The other end of the communication was quiet for a while before he heard the youth’s dependent voice, “Hug.”
Soon, the Duke of the Gran clan heard the deep voice coming from far to near again. The comm was picked up again. “I’m sorry. If there’s nothing else of importance—”
“Wait!” The Duke of the Gran clan’s tone was strange. “Marshal, who was that just now?”
Si Jisheng said in a deep voice, “He is my lover.”
The Duke of the Gran clan’s eyes were filled with surprise for a moment. The Marshal, who had a personality that could not tolerate a single grain of sand in his eyes, would actually have a day when he would get married. If there were no surprises, it should be that golden-haired merman.
A merman from a backward planet, with no background or power. The Marshal had no reason to put on an act, so it must be true.
The Duke of the Gran clan said abruptly, “Forgive my impertinence, Marshal. What are your plans for the future?” He asked tentatively, “I wonder when you will be holding your wedding?”
Si Jisheng lowered his eyes and glanced at the clueless Deng Xi. For the first time, he was in the mood to continue this meaningless conversation. “That will be decided by my lover.”
The Duke of the Gran clan did not ask any more questions. He let out a complete sigh of relief. “Marshal, I will immediately convene a meeting of the council. Within half an hour, the military will see the results of the royal family’s discussion.”
In just a few minutes, the Duke of the Gran clan’s state of mind had completely changed. The royal family would rather ally with the Council of Elders to fight against the military, all because the military was the Marshal’s one-man show.
No one would be willing to work with a monster with no emotions.
But if this killing machine had a weakness, a weakness, then everything would be different.
“I hope I can receive an invitation to your wedding.” The Duke of the Gran clan hung up the communication.
Deng Xi, who had belatedly realized that the little mute was on a communication, and had covered his own mouth, only then asked curiously, “Wedding? What’s that?”
Si Jisheng explained, “Humans are a very ritualistic race. They will, under the witness of the law, become a legal couple, and then invite their relatives and friends to hold a wedding for the two of them, to tell everyone that they have become mates.”
Deng Xi “hmm”-ed and said in a small voice, “The merman race also has such a ceremony.”
Si Jisheng replied with a low sound and did not ask any more questions. “Does your leg still hurt?”
The treatment solution was very effective. And it was just a simple red swelling, not chafed and broken, or bleeding. The fair and tender flesh at the base of Deng Xi’s leg had long since returned to normal after a night.
A merman’s constitution was simply too fragile. Even though nothing had really happened, it had still made Deng Xi uncomfortable for a whole night.
The little merman felt it and, thinking that it didn’t hurt that much, shook his head.
Si Jisheng was not at ease. “Let me see.”
Deng Xi’s ears turned red, and his blue eyes looked at the little mute, who was righteously saying that he wanted to look at that place of his, with an accusatory look. He pursed his lips and replied with a stammer.
The documents on the desk were pushed aside. Deng Xi was carried and sat on it. His soft cotton slippers had all fallen to the ground, and his bare toes were stepping on his hard thighs.
Si Jisheng bent his knuckles and hooked the hem of Deng Xi’s clothes.
The lounge had prepared Deng Xi’s pajamas, but the little merman had complained that his legs hurt yesterday and didn’t want to wear those small shorts. He had only worn a wide and loose set of pajamas, which barely covered the base of his legs. The collar was crooked, revealing his exquisite collarbone.
He lifted it and took a look. Seeing that the swelling had really gone down, he withdrew his hand. Deng Xi, who was still wearing his little pants inside, was still extremely shy. He felt that the little mute was doing it on purpose and kicked at the thigh under his feet with a humph.
And then, his whole body completely froze.
He had… stepped on it.
Deng Xi’s eyes almost instantly filled with a hot mist. From the base of his neck all the way to his face, his entire body was about to flush pink. After he had done a bad thing, he cautiously wanted to withdraw his foot.
The next second, his ankle was held by a large palm. He couldn’t withdraw it, and he couldn’t move.
Si Jisheng’s silver eyes were obscure. After a long while, he restrained himself and let go. “Go and put on your clothes and eat breakfast.”
Deng Xi frantically jumped off the table. He had not run a few steps towards the lounge when he ran back. He raised his head and gave the little mute’s face a big “smack,” and then ran away again.
It was a good morning kiss.
Si Jisheng was stunned for a moment before he sighed slightly and continued to deal with the documents.
·
Half an hour.
The royal family announced the video of the trial conference from that year.
The military arrested the Elder on the charge of being involved in human experiments.
These two matters simultaneously caused a huge uproar on the star network. When they saw the military arguing with reason in the video and releasing the black box data from that time, proving that it was a problem with the warship’s data that had led to the annihilation of the entire army.
And they had produced strong evidence to prove that the reason why the Marshal had transformed into a Jiaoren on the battlefield that year was entirely the work of the Council of Elders.
The public opinion had been overturned several times, and in the end, it was finally settled.
The video of the trial conference from three years ago had been reopened by the military. In a few minutes, it was dug up by everyone.
The hot comments that Deng Xi had seen before had almost all been replaced. The time was no longer three years ago, but today.
The top-liked comment was a long one:
[I am a survivor from E Star back then, and also a commoner as the Imperial Star calls us. In that era when the Zerg were rampant, you may not understand what the fringe stars of each galaxy were facing.
We, like all planets, were suffering from the Zerg invasion. War was happening at all times. But the fringe stars were different from other planets. We were the garbage planets that were tacitly abandoned.
We would not have any reinforcements. If we died, we died. But back then, E Star had survived because of the Marshal.
Because of the Marshal, I had a new life.
I personally watched as the Marshal, a commoner, walked out of E Star. With every promotion, it was a battle that he had won himself. The medals on his shoulders became more and more numerous with each passing year, and he became more and more distant from E Star.
But a few years later, a new policy was promulgated.
E Star was no longer a planet that was tacitly abandoned. The fringe stars could also receive support from the capital star. The Marshal had not forgotten this backward planet. He still remembered it.
Not only that, but the Imperial military, with the Marshal, had even, within limited conditions, provided support to other galaxies that were suffering from Zerg invasions.
The Empire had become the most trustworthy existence in the galaxy.
So I really can’t imagine how, three years ago, such a person would be a deserter, or even a traitor, as everyone said, on the battlefield.
It was too sudden.
From the Empire’s defeat, to the Marshal’s disappearance, to the announcement of his Jiaoren identity at the trial conference, from a glorious existence, he had become an object of public condemnation.
In the end, he was slowly forgotten by time, completely disappearing from the public’s sight, without any explanation, as if he were silently pleading guilty.
We, this group of people who supported the Marshal, were also attacked to the point of being unable to defend ourselves. But with the bloody lives of hundreds of thousands of people, so many families, we couldn’t even find a target to counterattack.
It seemed that we could only accept it.
But the facts proved that after seeing the promulgation of the《Alien Convention》policy, I knew that the Marshal had not changed.
He was still the existence that we admired and pursued.
I am about to graduate from the Imperial Military Academy on the capital star this year. I had worked so hard to get in, but after what had happened three years ago, I had also been in a muddle for a long time. I had originally thought that it would be good to be an ordinary person in the future.
But after seeing all this today, I admit that I also really don’t know what need there is to protect an Empire that secretly conducts human experiments, steals genes, tampers with warships, and even hides the truth from the public.
But I have also seen that the sun will always come. As long as the Marshal is in the military for a day, the Empire will still have the beauty that allows everyone to persevere. It is worth us fighting for it for a day.
I won’t say anymore. I’ve been booking the training field for several days.
Finally, I’ll ask one last question. Marshal, when can you take off those mechanical gloves?]
After the adjutant had finished reading, he silently met the secretary-general’s gaze and raised an eyebrow. “So? Do you dare to send that damn treatment pod in the treatment room to the scrap yard with me?”
The secretary-general took off his suit and rolled up his sleeves. “Let’s go.”
The treatment pod that had given Deng Xi nightmares for several days was completely moved out of the military and political building and was thrown somewhere unknown.
