Chapter 194
Xing Nuo slept until noon, then, rubbing his sleepy eyes, sat up in bed, his mind still foggy, then flopped back down.
“Lu Qi, you said you’d wake me up.”
Lu Qi was silent for a moment, then said:
“Xing Nuo was tired. Needed rest.”
Xing Nuo sighed and, ruffling his messy curls, got out of bed, shuffling in his slippers.
Having slept so late, everyone was gone.
He found a plate of breakfast and a note on the coffee table.
He smiled, recognizing his dad’s elegant handwriting, and took a bite of a custard bun.
“Xing Nuo, you home?” A knock on the door.
Xing Nuo turned and, hearing Qi Yao’s familiar voice, paused, then went to open the door.
Qi Yao looked exhausted, dark circles under his eyes, his face pale, his clothes wrinkled and rumpled.
“Your dad and brother not home?”
Xing Nuo nodded, looking at the person standing beside Qi Yao, his brow furrowed.
“Who’s this?”
Qi Yao introduced him:
“I think you know why I’m here. This is an observer from our department.”
Xing Nuo nodded, let them in, and closed the door.
Having learned tea-making from Shen Wen, he skillfully prepared tea for his guests, along with some snacks and fruit.
Qi Yao, exhausted and hungry, devoured the snacks and tea, then took a bite of an apple.
Xing Nuo, seeing this, offered him his custard bun.
“Your job seems tough. Always busy, not even time to eat.”
Qi Yao, having watched Xing Nuo grow up, didn’t stand on ceremony and ate the bun, then sighed.
“It can’t be helped. You know I was trapped in a dungeon for almost two years.”
Xing Nuo, his curiosity piqued, asked:
“What happened? Why such a dangerous dungeon?”
Qi Yao sighed and explained briefly:
“Orders from above. That dungeon was expanding rapidly, filled with smaller dungeons. Within two days of appearing in the real world, thousands of people were trapped inside.”
“We couldn’t let it continue expanding, so we sent a team of elite ability users.”
“But it was incredibly difficult. We didn’t die, but the mental torture was excruciating. We couldn’t even find the core monster at first.”
“Then, somehow, the difficulty of the sub-dungeons decreased, giving us a chance to regroup and plan.”
“But that Clown seemed to know what we were doing, toying with us, giving us hope, then crushing it, almost breaking us.”
“Then, as you know, Guild Zero One started their massacre, and although we were weak, we couldn’t just stand by and watch. We kept saving people until the dungeon closed.”
He looked at Xing Nuo.
“Xing Nuo, I’ve watched you grow up. Be honest with me. How much do you know about the horror world?”
Xing Nuo, listening to Qi Yao’s story, sighed softly.
He thought for a moment, then looked up, his eyes bright and innocent, and said:
“I know…more than you.”
Qi Yao was stunned.
Before he could speak, Xing Nuo continued:
“Why does Guild Zero One kill people? Because their leader, Sang Ming, needs energy. Humans and monsters, they all have energy.”
“And the dungeon incursions…also Sang Ming’s doing. He used the monsters’ hunger for human flesh and blood…to push the dungeons into the real world…to capture ordinary people.”
Qi Yao, although aware of Guild Zero One’s ruthlessness, hadn’t expected this.
The observer, taking notes, also paused, pushing up his glasses, speechless.
They had initially thought it was a conflict between humans and monsters.
But now, it seemed humanity itself was the enemy.
“Investigate Sang Ming. When did he disappear? And what was he doing before?”
Qi Yao sighed.
“Your…other dad, Wen Xingxue, also told us to investigate the first group of missing people.”
“Sang Ming was among them. A street thug before entering the dungeon.”
A nobody, living a meaningless life of petty crimes and violence.
Xing Nuo wasn’t surprised. He had always thought Sang Ming was immature and impulsive. Clearly, he hadn’t even finished elementary school.
“See? Education is important.”
Even his second brother, Shen Baizhou, a monster, had managed to get into university!
Much better than Sang Ming, a grade school dropout!
Just then, a loud explosion echoed from outside.
Qi Yao instinctively shielded Xing Nuo, pulling him to the floor.
“Cover your head!”
Xing Nuo, his arms around his head, asked Lu Qi mentally:
“Lu Qi, who’s outside?”
Lu Qi, his mental energy extending, quickly assessed the situation.
“Guild Zero One players.”
Before Xing Nuo could warn Qi Yao, the balcony window shattered, the glass raining down.
Several arrogant voices yelled:
“Look who’s here! Saves us the trouble of finding you!”
The Guild Zero One players, their guns raised, entered the apartment, their gazes sweeping over Xing Nuo and Qi Yao, and sneered.
“So scared now? Weren’t you all tough in the dungeon?”
Qi Yao, recognizing them, his heart sinking, asked:
“How did you get here? Did the barrier break?”
A player, his face filled with a smug disdain, chuckled.
“Almost. We’re the first wave. Hahaha!”
Their faces were flushed with excitement, eager to unleash their violence, to bring hell to the real world.
And they, the powerful players of Guild Zero One, would be the rulers of this new world.
They grinned, and seeing Qi Yao and the others trying to defend themselves, fired their prop guns.
Xing Nuo rolled behind the coffee table and, looking at their arrogant faces, said:
“A few years ago, other players came from the horror world. They also called themselves the first. You know what happened to them?”
The players paused, looking at Xing Nuo, and one of them snorted.
“What are you trying to say? Trying to scare us? Surrender now, and we’ll let you die quickly.”
Xing Nuo just smiled, looking at them, and continued:
“They all died. Sang Ming gave them the wrong location for the rift. They tried to force their way through…and they exploded.”
Qi Yao had also been there, but Shen Yan had used a memory-erasing prop, and he had forgotten.
But Xing Nuo remembered, the scene replaying itself in his dreams.
“Do you think Sang Ming gave you the right location this time? If he’s wrong again, you’re not pioneers, but just…idiots, walking to your deaths.”
The players’ faces paled, one of them, a lower-level player, who had been having doubts about Sang Ming’s plan, saying:
“No wonder Sang Ming told us to find this Xing Nuo and kill him. He knew we wouldn’t survive, just wanted us to be useful before we died.”
Another player, higher-ranking, although also feeling a pang of fear, yelled:
“Don’t listen to him! He’s just trying to stall!”
Xing Nuo peeked out from behind the coffee table.
“If the rift is real, why didn’t Sang Ming come himself?”
“Because he’s afraid! He’s using you as guinea pigs!”
The Guild Zero One players, selfish and ruthless, although loyal to Sang Ming, would prioritize their own survival above all else.
Their confidence shaken, their movements hesitant, they exchanged uneasy glances.
Xing Nuo pressed his advantage.
“You can still escape. Sang Ming, he’s smart. He wouldn’t come himself unless he was certain.”
The players were panicking, one of them clutching his chest, his face pale.
“My chest hurts! What if he’s right?!”
The next moment, he exploded, his body dissolving into black smoke.
Xing Nuo shrugged, smiling faintly.
“See? I told you.”
The remaining players, terrified, tried to escape, but they couldn’t find the way back.
The door opened, and Shen Wen entered, carrying groceries.
Seeing the shattered balcony window, his smile vanished, his face hardening.
“We had burglars?”
The players’ composure crumbled, and one of them, higher-ranking, seeing Shen Wen, his eyes widening in shock, stammered:
“You’re…you’re that monster?!”
What’s a monster like him doing in the human world?!
Before he could finish, he also exploded, his body dissolving into black smoke.
One by one, they exploded, like dark fireworks, disappearing without a trace,
leaving only the shattered window and a stunned silence.
Qi Yao and the observer, looking at Shen Wen, their heads down, didn’t speak.
Shen Wen, smiling, his voice cold and distant, asked:
“Staying for lunch?”
