Chapter 195
Qi Yao and the observer, having heard the player’s dying words, quickly left Xing Nuo’s apartment, avoiding Shen Wen’s gaze.
They went downstairs, crossed the street, and entered a small shop in a nearby alley, closing the door behind them.
The SIA chief, seeing them return, asked anxiously:
“Well? Anything unusual about that kid?”
Two other high-ranking ability users were also there, waiting.
“We saw Xing Nuo, and he told us…”
Qi Yao summarized Xing Nuo’s information. “It’s consistent with what we’ve gathered from the dungeons. Sang Ming is still searching for the dimensional rift. If he finds the right one, the monsters will invade.”
Everyone’s faces were grim. The chief lit a cigarette, his gaze distant.
A female ability user, impatient, looked at Qi Yao.
“Did you confirm if that teenager’s family are high-level monsters?”
They had been gathering intel in dungeons, even obtaining a list of high-level monsters, but its authenticity was uncertain.
Qi Yao sighed. He didn’t want to believe it, but he couldn’t deny the evidence.
“Not conclusively. The players who’ve seen them are all in the horror world. Our contact with players is limited.”
A hot-headed ability user slammed his fist on the table.
“Then let’s test them! Create some dangerous situations and see how they react!”
Qi Yao objected immediately. “That’s too risky! What if we hurt innocent people? It’s just a suspicion.”
The hothead retorted: “We’re running out of time! The monsters are invading! We can’t afford to be cautious!”
Qi Yao took a deep breath and said coldly:
“Are the monsters the root of the problem? It’s Sang Ming, a human, his greed, that brought us to this. We’re focusing on the wrong thing.”
He paced back and forth. “Our priority isn’t whether Xing Nuo’s family are monsters, but how to stop Sang Ming. If we stop him, prevent the barrier from breaking, we can still save our world.”
They argued, but they couldn’t come up with a plan.
They couldn’t even find Sang Ming.
At Xing Nuo’s apartment, a repairman was replacing the shattered balcony window.
The broken glass and damaged flowerpots were gone.
That evening, Xing Nuo sat on the sofa, his head resting on his dad’s lap, watching TV, his mind wandering.
Shen Wen gently stroked his hair and asked softly:
“Xing Nuo, are you afraid of Daddy?”
Xing Nuo sat up, his face serious.
“Why would I be? I’m not afraid of my family.”
Shen Wen’s eyes were warm and loving. He loved his son and worried about him, like any parent.
“I’m just afraid that someday…”
Xing Nuo interrupted him firmly. “That won’t happen.”
He looked at his dad, then at Shen Yan, who was clearing the table.
“I’ll protect you and Big Brother. We’ll be a normal family, like always.”
Shen Wen chuckled, his eyes sparkling, and ruffled Xing Nuo’s hair.
“Don’t worry about us. Daddy can handle anything.”
Even if the world ended, with Shen Wen’s power, they would be safe.
Xing Nuo hummed, snuggled against his dad, and continued watching TV.
Life went on.
Xing Nuo was now a senior in high school, his schedule demanding.
Winter was especially difficult.
He would splash cold water on his face to wake up, shivering in the cold.
And the anomalies were becoming more frequent.
Sang Ming, desperate, was sending waves of players into the real world, causing chaos.
Xing Nuo, walking to school, his cheeks red from the cold wind,
saw a group of players stealing a motorcycle, using a prop to knock the rider off, then speeding away, spraying a strange mist.
Similar incidents were happening everywhere:
At school, Shen Baizhou saw players push a student down the stairs.
At Shen Yan’s company, a team working on a project was attacked by players spraying mist.
And in their complex, Shen Wen saw players attack an elderly man and his grandson.
Rongcheng was the epicenter, and the SIA mobilized all its resources.
Xing Nuo, seeing the players on the stolen motorcycle, covered his nose and mouth, waited for the mist to dissipate, then jumped, kicking them off.
The players, surprised, tried to retaliate, but their bodies exploded, dissolving into black smoke.
At the school, Shen Baizhou, unseen, caught the falling student.
He then appeared in the hallway, and the two players, unable to react, vanished.
He watched as the other students screamed and ran, then picked up the players’ dropped props and used a memory-erasing spray.
At Shen Yan’s company, the office workers screamed and scattered.
Shen Yan evacuated the floor, then returned to his office, looked at the smashed computers, and chuckled coldly.
A player, still in a frenzy of destruction, looked up, saw Shen Yan, and his eyes widened in recognition.
“You’re…Shen Yan?! That monster!”
Shen Yan, rarely seen in his human form by players, but controlling many dungeons, was recognizable to some.
He smiled, his eyes cold and menacing.
“Since you know who I am, why are you causing trouble in my company?”
The player, his legs trembling, tried to escape, but a black mist blocked the exits, and he collapsed to the floor.
“It-it wasn’t me! It was Sang Ming! He ordered us to do this! We didn’t want to!”
“Yes! It wasn’t us!”
Shen Yan, ignoring their pleas, seeing they hadn’t exploded after several minutes, understood.
Sang Ming was using them as guinea pigs, sending multiple teams through different rifts.
These players had been lucky, finding the real rift.
But they had run into Shen Yan.
He smiled coldly and, with a wave of his hand, they vanished.
So, you found the right rift? he thought. Let me eliminate this possibility for Sang Ming.
In the complex garden, Shen Wen and a few residents tried to stop the attacking players.
But they were outmatched. Shen Wen, not wanting to expose himself, discreetly touched Lao Yong.
Lao Yong’s eyes glazed over, and he punched a player, knocking him unconscious.
The players laughed. “You think you can defeat us?!”
Then they were stunned as Lao Yong effortlessly knocked them all out.
Then, they exploded, dissolving into black smoke.
The other residents, stunned, then cheered, crowding around Lao Yong.
“Lao Yong! You’re so strong!”
“What happened? You’ve become so powerful!”
“What were those things? Turning into smoke? Evil spirits?”
Shen Yan, seeing the commotion, picked up his dropped flowerpot and quietly left.
